The Business of Weather-Proofing Medication Deliveries
You might think this is new, but…
UVA Health Pharmacy faced a common challenge: severe winter storms disrupting regular deliveries. Adrienne Cobb, the director of UVA Central Fulfillment Services, shared her insights on how they managed to keep medications flowing despite the weather.
Adapting to Unpredictable Weather
“Last week when we knew that there was a storm coming, we decided to proactively look ahead to medications that we might have on automatic refill. So, a lot of our transplant patients, a lot of our special multi-medications,” said Cobb. “We move those deliveries and just proactively added them on to last week.”
This proactive approach allowed UVA Pharmacy to handle the storm better than expected. By moving thousands of additional deliveries, they ensured that critical medications would be available to patients who might otherwise have faced delays.
Consumer Preparedness Tips
Cobb also offered advice for consumers: “The other thing I would recommend is that they have a safe place for the driver to deliver the medication. Keep their driveways clear if they can. I know this time it was like cemented in, but clear driveways, safe place for the medications to be delivered, and that will really help.”
While simple, these steps can make all the difference when severe weather hits. Clearing driveways not only ensures deliveries but also prevents potential damage to both vehicles and packages.
A Lesson in Supply Chain Resilience
This level of preparation does not happen before every storm, but UVA Pharmacy took this opportunity to demonstrate the importance of supply chain resilience in healthcare. When severe weather is on the horizon, it’s crucial for businesses—and their customers—to be prepared.
For healthcare providers like UVA, the stakes are high. Delays can mean more than just inconvenience; they can affect patient health and well-being.
By planning ahead and communicating effectively with both patients and staff, UVA Pharmacy set a strong example of how to handle unexpected challenges.
The takeaway? Whether you’re in healthcare or any other industry, always be ready for the unpredictable. Weather is just one of many factors that can disrupt operations. Proactive preparation and clear communication can make all the difference.
