Jeremiyah Love: A College Football Star’s Journey from Offered by Saban to Success at Notre Dame

Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love, who was once offered by legendary coach Nick Saban of Alabama, has recently opened up about his decision to commit to the Fighting Irish. In a segment of the “Triple Option” podcast, Love shared that while he had a positive experience visiting Alabama, he ultimately felt Notre Dame was a better fit for him.

Turning Down Alabama: Love’s Decision

“I liked Alabama,” Love said during his interview on the podcast. “When I went there, I had a great visit. I liked all the coaches. I loved coach Saban; I got to sit down with him and talk to him over some food.

He was a great coach and person in general, too.” However, Love explained that Alabama wasn’t his first choice due to personal reasons: “Alabama just wasn’t the place for me, even though they had a great coaching staff. The town was really cool, great place to be. It just wasn’t for me. Notre Dame was a better place for me.”

Success at Notre Dame

Since committing to Notre Dame in 2023, Love has proven his worth on the field, leading the Fighting Irish to success. He managed stellar performances during Notre Dame’s 49-10 win over Navy Midshipmen in Week 11 of college football action, with 94 rushing yards and two touchdowns. His efforts were recognized when he was named one of the 13 semifinalists for the Maxwell Award, which recognizes the college football player of the year.

Love’s Heisman Trophy buzz has been growing as well.

With 988 rushing yards on 154 carries and 13 touchdowns, along with 254 receiving yards and three more touchdowns, he is currently joint No. 1 in total touchdowns (16) and No. 3 in yards from scrimmage (1,242) nationally. According to the PFSN Running Back Impact score, Love ranks as the second-best running back in college football.

Coach Freeman on Love’s Heisman Candidacy

In a press conference before Notre Dame’s Week 12 clash against Pittsburgh, head coach Marcus Freeman discussed Love’s potential for winning individual awards. “It’s a great award, a huge honor,” Freeman stated. “Somebody’s going to win it. But I think Jeremiyah Love will be the first to tell you that winning a game is way more important than that individual award. He’s going to do everything in his power to make sure we’re prepared to win a game, and if the Heisman Trophy comes with it, then great.” Freeman’s words underscore the balance between personal accolades and team success.

While only three running backs have won the Heisman Trophy this century—Reggie Bush of USC (2005), Mark Ingram of Alabama (2009), and Derrick Henry also of Alabama (2015)—Love’s performance suggests he is well-positioned to make a strong case for his candidacy.

As college football continues into its final weeks, fans will be watching closely as Love seeks to solidify his position among the top running backs in the country and potentially claim individual honors like the Maxwell Award or even the Heisman Trophy. For now, he remains focused on leading Notre Dame towards their next victory.
