The Fall of a Hero: Kayce Dutton’s New Beginning
And so it begins, with a twist that any ‘Yellowstone’ fan could have seen coming but didn’t quite expect. In the new spinoff ‘Marshals,’ Luke Grimes’ character Kayce Dutton is leaving the familiar ranch behind to join the U.S. Marshals as he tries to find his way in a new world. Spencer Hudnut, creator and executive producer of ‘Marshals,’ explained that “Any hero’s journey needs to begin in tragedy.” And poor Monica Dutton, played by Kelsey Asbille, is the tragic figure whose death leaves Kayce with only memories.
Episode 2: A Valley of Buried Skeletons
But this new beginning isn’t without its challenges. Episode 2, titled “Zone of Death,” drops on Sunday, March 8. In it, we see Kayce trying to embrace his new path while a Marshals operation to stop a domestic terror attack lands him in the middle of his family’s history. Spencer Hudnut further elaborated that “While confronting his past, he must also learn to ingratiate himself with his new Marshals teammates.” The stakes are high, and the journey is bound to be rocky.
Staying True to ‘Yellowstone’
It’s a smart move by CBS Networks to capitalize on the popularity of ‘Yellowstone’ while giving it its own space. However, one can’t help but wonder how much freedom Spencer Hudnut had in crafting this new series. It’s clear that they are trying not to replicate the formula too closely, yet still keep enough of the Dutton family drama to maintain viewer interest.
