Angela James: The ‘Wayne Gretzky’ of Women’s Sport
In Grade 5, Erika Kinsey chose Angela James for her school project on influential historical figures. Little did she know that years later, she would be sharing the ice with the legendary hockey player.
The Visionary Behind the Game
James, a Hockey Hall of Famer and former United States Olympic star, is considered one of the first superstars in modern women’s hockey. She helped Canada win four gold medals at the IIHF World Women’s Championship (1990, 1992, 1994, 1997) and was among the first two women inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2010.
Now 60 years old, James is still making waves. The event at Coca-Cola Coliseum in downtown Toronto brought together young girls from diverse backgrounds to learn from her and other celebrities like Meghan Duggan, Anthony Stewart, and Anson Carter.
A Dream Come True
“To be out there with Angela, it was really exciting,” Kinsey said. “And it’s amazing just seeing all the girls come out, different races, different ages, and everyone just hanging out and playing together.” The clinic not only provided a dream opportunity but also highlighted how inclusive hockey has become.
Reflections on Growth
James reflected on the changes in womenβs hockey over her career. “When Anson and Stewart allowed me to talk to the girls and I’m looking at them, I’m thinking to myself, ‘Never in my life would I have imagined that all of these girls with diverse backgrounds would be standing in front of me on the ice like that,'” she said.
She added, “And they’re all so talented. To have a beautiful session like today and to know someone wants to know about your lifestyle and your influences and that you inspire them, it’s just so special.” The event was part of the NHL Player Inclusion Coalitionβs efforts to celebrate James’s continued impact on the sport.
A New Generation
The clinic concluded with a trip to the Hockey Hall of Fame, where artifacts related to James were displayed. The girls also had the opportunity to watch a game between the Chicago Blackhawks and Toronto Maple Leafs at Scotiabank Arena.
James’s journey from an influential player to a role model for the next generation demonstrates the evolution of womenβs hockey. The event was not just about celebrating her Hall of Fame career but also ensuring that the legacy continues through inspiring future players like Kinsey.
For James, it was more than just a clinic; it was a reminder of how far the sport has come and the importance of inclusivity in shaping the next generation of hockey stars.
