Behind the Scenes: Sarah’s Death in “Obsession”

You might think this is new, but… horror movies have always relied on memorable deaths. In “Obsession,” Megan Lawless plays a character whose demise remains fresh even years later.

When it comes to her death scene, Lawless wasn’t just an actor; she was a part of the set design. The actress described how they used a doll version for the closeup shots of Sarah’s face after the brutal encounter with Wish Nikki.

“We had two takes to get it right,” Lawless said, “The whole sequence is just funny. We had to play out this thing that felt a little silly, but with 100 percent commitment.”

Breaking Through the Glass

But let’s talk about those glass-breaking scenes, shall we? According to Lawless, it was no simple matter. Navarette used a helmeted wig to break through the glass, and then Lawless had to bash her own head against a brick. “Bash” is the key word here—it’s not just a light tap but an intense impact.

Lawless admitted she was thrilled at getting to go out in such an “iconic way,” calling it her favorite day on set.

“It’s funny because we had to play out this thing that felt a little silly, but with 100 percent commitment,” Lawless added. “The whole sequence is just funny.”

The Audience’s Reaction

And then there was the reaction. Lawless revealed that her death at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) screening was met with cheering from the audience, a response she found both unexpected and in stride.

“Despite that, she admitted to being surprised at Obsession’s TIFF screening and her death was met with cheering,” Lawless said. “Unexpected, but something I took in stride because horror fans are total sickos, and I love that about them.”

Reflections on the Characters

Lawless also shared insights into the characters of Bear, Nikki, and Sarah. She thinks they could’ve had a relationship under different circumstances but isn’t into the idea of Sarah or Nikki as villains.

“Much of the online chatter about Obsession has been about Sarah’s fate and her relationship with Bear and Nikki,” she said. “Like Bear’s actor Michael Johnston, Lawless thinks their characters could’ve had something under different circumstances. But she’s also not into the idea of Sarah or Nikki as villains (Bear on the other hand….), nor does she think Sarah would’ve made a move while the other two were still in a relationship.”

She added that even the idea of them actually following through on the kiss at the party is something Lawless thinks “goes against everything Sarah believes.”
