It all began in Batala, where drug abuse was rampant. To steer his son away from such a path, Bajwa’s father enrolled him in an academy at seven. Young Dilpreet idolized Yuvi paa (Yuvaraj Singh) and aspired to follow in his footsteps.
From Gurdaspur to Canada
Bajwa had high hopes of representing Punjab in the Ranji Trophy but his plans took an unforeseen turn. A game against Patiala during the U19 level was his turning point, where he scored 136 runs and secured a memorable victory for Gurdaspur. This earned him a call-up to a camp organized by the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) at Mullanpur Stadium.
However, Bajwa’s cricketing journey was about to take an unexpected detour. He had to go to Canada for urgent paperwork and got stuck due to the COVID-19 lockdown. “I thought I would be back soon,” he recalls, “but that didn’t happen.”
The Canadian Turnaround
In Canada, Bajwa found himself establishing a career that eventually led him to captaincy. His performances in domestic cricket earned him a spot in the Global T20 (GT20) under coach Dave Whatmore and subsequently in the national team. “I was always grateful for the opportunities given by Shakib Al Hasan and Chris Gayle,” he says.
Bajwa’s leadership skills were recognized early, making him the captain of Gurdaspur district at a young age. His transition to leading Canada’s national team came smoothly after years of domestic experience.
