The Rise of Mason Fluharty: From Cape Henlopen to the World Series
Mason Fluharty, a 24-year-old graduate of Cape Henlopen High School in Delaware, has made waves in professional baseball. He will make his World Series debut on Friday night as a relief pitcher for the Toronto Blue Jays.
A Local Hero: His Journey to the Big Leagues
Fluharty’s path from Cape Henlopen High School to the World Series is an inspiring story. He played for the Cape Henlopen Vikings Baseball team from his freshman year until he graduated in 2019, according to former coach Ben Evick.
“When Mason came in as a Freshman, he was ready to compete,” said Evick. “He got here, set clear goals for himself, and continued to work his entire four years for us. He’s put in the time to get where he is.”
Evick highlights Fluharty’s significant achievement: he closed out Cape Henlopen High School with a victory that secured their first state championship title. This success is remembered fondly, as Evick says, “He came in relief and got the strikeout at the end of the game in a big situation.”
Support from Home: Community Pride and Expectations
The local community is buzzing with excitement over Fluharty’s World Series appearance. MaryEllen Kiernan, who manages the Irish Eyes Pub and Restaurant in Lewes, says they are switching their allegiance this time around.
“It’s a rare occasion inside this building that we root for anybody but the Phillies, but we’re going to go Blue Jays all the way,” said Kiernan. “Mason’s mother is our bookkeeper, so we’ve all kind of seen him grow up.”
Kiernan believes the community feels a strong connection with Fluharty and his success. She adds that many expect local residents to turn out in support of their hometown hero throughout the World Series.
Setting an Example: Inspiration for Future Athletes
Fluharty’s journey is not only exciting but also motivating for current students at Cape Henlopen High School. Evick sees Fluharty as a role model, emphasizing that “it really lets these kids know that you can do anything. Set goals, and whatever you choose that goal to be, it’s in reach.”
For the first time since 2018, a Cape Henlopen graduate will compete at the highest level of professional baseball. Fluharty’s story speaks volumes about the potential for young athletes from Southern Delaware and beyond.
