Aldrich Potgieter’s New Look: A Weighty Decision

As Aldrich Potgieter prepares to take the stage once more, his transformation has become the talk of the golfing world. Last February, the 21-year-old South African hit the scales and realized a 35-pound drop from where he ended last season. This is no small feat in the hyper-competitive landscape of professional golf.

Potgieter’s journey began with a new training regimen overseen by Marnus Marais, who has a roster that includes the world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler. “I got in a nice system where I can kind of grind on some things that you can’t really do when you’re out here,” Potgieter said.

From Weight Loss to Club Adjustments

The weight loss has been swift, but adjusting the clubs has taken longer. Despite being still very long (ranking third on tour), Potgieter finds himself outside the top 130 in key statistics like strokes gained approach and around the green. This has led him to miss cuts at major tournaments including the American Express, Farmers Insurance Open, and WM Phoenix Open.

However, his recent performance at Pebble Beach offers a glimmer of hope.

Tying for 60th with a limited field suggests he’s starting to find his rhythm again. “A lot of change,” Potgieter noted, “and I think we picked up a few things that changed with my posture and how I’m setting up to the ball.”

The weight loss has certainly played a role in his adjustments. “Lost some weight, so I think that kind of played a bit of a factor,” he added. This newfound awareness is key for any athlete navigating such significant changes.

Contending at Riviera

Riviera serves as the perfect proving ground for Potgieter’s recent transformations. Back-to-back 3-under performances have brought him into contention for the first time since winning the Rocket Classic last July. “It feels good to be in this position,” he admitted.

Challenges Ahead

Potgieter faces a series of challenges as his new look takes shape. The upcoming Genesis Invitational offers a prime opportunity to showcase his progress, but the prize money structure is another factor. With full payouts from the $20 million purse, the tournament stands out on the calendar.

For now, Potgieter remains optimistic about where this journey could lead. “You might think this is new, but it’s been a long road to get here,” he concluded. Golf is a game of inches and millimeters—Potgieter seems determined to make every inch count.

Riviera awaits with bated breath as Potgieter continues his adjustment process.
