New Expectations for Each Bracket in Commander Brackets System

Gavin Verhey, on behalf of the Commander Format Panel, announced significant updates to the Commander Brackets system and Game Changers list. These changes are aimed at improving the overall experience by providing clearer expectations for each bracket level.

Bracket Expectations and Turn Restrictions

The new system emphasizes that players should have a clear understanding of what they can expect from each bracket:

  • Exhibition (Bracket 1): Players are encouraged to build highly thematic decks with unique gameplay experiences. The focus is on showcasing the deck’s theme over raw power level, and games in this bracket should last at least nine turns.
  • Core (Bracket 2): Decks in this bracket are expected to be straightforward, unoptimized, and designed for social interaction. Games should generally go at least eight turns before a win or loss occurs.
  • Upgraded (Bracket 3): These decks feature strong synergy and high card quality, allowing players to disrupt opponents effectively.

Turn six is the threshold for most games in this bracket.

  • Optimized (Bracket 4): The focus here is on fast, lethal, and consistent decks that can win the game quickly. Bracket 5, or cEDH, is reserved for meticulously designed metagame strategies with high risk but potentially high rewards.

This new framework aims to make the brackets more accessible and enjoyable by setting clear expectations for gameplay duration based on deck themes and power levels.

Revisions to Tutor Restrictions and Game Changers List

To enhance flexibility and creativity, the Commander Format Panel has removed tutor restrictions from all but Bracket 5. This change allows players to incorporate a wider range of card interactions without fear of violating bracket rules. Additionally, the panel has updated the criteria for what constitutes a “Game Changer” on the list:

  • No Early-Game Combos: The panel acknowledges that not all combos are problematic and that some can occur early in the game without disrupting gameplay.
  • Turn Restrictions: Each bracket now has a clear turn expectation, which helps players understand how to approach their deck’s potential for both win conditions and disruption.

The Game Changers list has been revised to include only those cards that significantly impact the game in early turns or through resource hoarding. Cards like Expropriate, Sway of the Stars, Vorinclex Voice of Hunger, and others have been removed from the list due to their high mana cost or lack of disruptive potential across all brackets.

Focusing on Theme and Social Interaction

The updates also emphasize the importance of deck themes in Exhibition, where players can showcase unique and unusual creations. Core is now less tied to preconstructed decks, allowing for a broader range of player choices while maintaining social interaction as a key aspect of gameplay.

These changes reflect the panel’s commitment to creating a more balanced and enjoyable Commander experience for all participants. By providing clearer guidelines and removing restrictive rules, the updates aim to foster creativity and community engagement in the Commander format.

The Commander Format Panel invites feedback from the community on these new changes and is committed to continuously refining the system based on ongoing input and playtesting.
