Upcoming 2027 Limited Championship
The world of Magic: The Gathering is getting ready for an exciting event in 2027. The WeeklyMTG live stream recently announced the details of the upcoming Magic Limited Championship, which will focus on Limited play, rewarding players with a prize pool of $500,000 and invitations to the World Championship for the Top 8.
This championship is designed to highlight the skills required in Limited play. Throughout 2026, players can qualify through various events including Limited Championship Qualifiers (LTQs) at Regional Championships, Spotlight Series, MagicCons, and on MTG Arena.
Additionally, players who rank within the Top 16 of drafters during the 2026 Premier Play season will also have a chance to participate.
A notable highlight is that the winner of Magic World Championship 32 will be automatically qualified for this event. Furthermore, members of the Magic Hall of Fame can redeem their yearly Pro Tour invite to join in the competition. This setup ensures that both emerging and established players have a fair shot at participating.
Updates to Commander Bracket System
The Commander Format Panel (CFP) is also making changes to how the Commander format operates, which will affect all players starting this month. According to Gavin Verhey, several updates are being introduced:
Average Turns Estimate: Each Bracket now includes an average turns estimate. This change aims to give players a clearer idea of their likely game duration before they start losing to one player’s “winning” strategy.
This could help in strategic planning and potentially reduce frustration from games that drag on too long.
No Longer Tied to Preconstructed Decks: The Core Bracket 2 will no longer be linked to the Magic preconstructed Commander decks. As more precons are released, their contents and themes may vary widely. Therefore, they will not automatically fall under Core by default, ensuring a broader range of strategies and deck builds.
Tutor Restrictions Removed: The previous system limited how many tutor effects could be played in each Bracket based on its level.
However, community feedback indicated that these restrictions were unnecessary, especially given the recent changes to the format’s Game Changers. As a result, the restriction has been lifted entirely.
Removed from Game Changers List
A few cards have been removed from the Game Changers list, including:
- High Mana Value: Expropriate Jin-Gitaxias, Sway of the Stars, Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger.
- Limited Legends: Kinnan, Bonder Prodigy, Urza, Lord High Artificer, Winota, Joiner of Forces.
- Uncategorized: Yuriko, the Tiger’s Shadow, Food Chain.
These cards were deemed safe for removal as they either don’t provide too much early-game access or are balanced within the current power levels. The CFP decided to review these changes and will reassess the Bracket system towards the end of February next year before making any further adjustments.
The ongoing evolution of Magic: The Gathering continues to adapt based on player feedback, ensuring that the game remains engaging and balanced for all its diverse communities. These updates promise to enhance the overall experience for both Limited and Commander players alike.
