The Race for California Governor in 2026
Billionaire activist Tom Steyer has officially entered the race to become the next governor of California, announcing his candidacy on November 19, 2025. This decision comes just weeks after he successfully campaigned for the passage of California’s Proposition 50 earlier this year.
Steyerβs Platform
In his YouTube video announcement, Steyer outlined his key goals as governor. He aims to make California more affordable by implementing several initiatives, including lowering electric bills by 25% and allowing residents to choose their own electricity providers. Additionally, he plans to build one million new homes within four years through accelerated permitting processes, reduced taxes and building fees, and the use of technology to lower construction costs.
A Crowded Field
Steyer’s entry into the gubernatorial race adds another contender to a field already packed with ambitious candidates. Current frontrunners include former Congresswoman Katie Porter, Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco, and former Fox News host Steve Hilton. On the Democratic side, potential challengers include former U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Xavier Becerra, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond, former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, and former State Controller Betty Yee.
Timing and Strategy
The timing of Steyerβs announcement is strategic, given that the race for governor has just begun to heat up with less than a year before Election Day in 2026. Brian Sobel, a longtime Bay Area-based political analyst, believes that Steyer will need to carefully manage his image and messaging strategy.
“Steyer canβt afford to come off as an angry man, the ‘anti-Trump’ guy,” Sobel said. “He’s going to have to focus and provide a platform and solutions that speak directly to Californians.”
Past Campaigns and Financial Background
Steyer, who is currently estimated to be worth around $1.6 billion, co-founded and ran the hedge fund Farallon Capital Management. He has a history of significant financial backing for political campaigns, having spent more than $12 million in his self-promoted “Stick It to Trump” campaign during the 2020 presidential race.
Despite his formidable financial resources, Steyer may face challenges in balancing his anti-Trump messaging with the need to resonate with a broader base of voters. His success will depend on his ability to articulate solutions that address specific concerns of California residents, particularly those related to housing affordability and energy costs.
