The Sky’s the Limit: Airline Expansion in February
Air Transat is making a bold move into the Brazilian market, signaling a significant shift for Canadian airlines. Starting on February 4th, Air Transat will launch nonstop flights from Toronto Pearson to Rio de Janeiro Galeão International Airport, alongside a weekly Montreal-Rio service starting February 5th. This expansion fills a gap in the Canadian market and positions Air Transat as a key player in South American travel.
Porter Airlines: From Regional Operator to Leisure Carrier
Fellow Canadian carrier Porter Airlines is also expanding its international footprint, launching Montreal-Nassau service on February 5th. This move marks the airline’s ongoing transformation from a regional operator into a broader leisure carrier. Additionally, Porter is introducing daily Vancouver-Phoenix service starting February 2nd, showcasing its commitment to diversifying its route network.
American Airlines: Miami-Bimini Nonstop Service
In the Caribbean, American Airlines is set to introduce the only nonstop service between the U.S. and Bimini from Miami on February 14th. With three weekly flights operating with E175 aircraft, this new route will offer passengers a direct connection to Bimini, marking American’s seventh destination in the Bahamas.
Breeze Airways: Building an International Network
Breeze Airways is continuing its international expansion by launching New Orleans-Cancun service on February 7th and Providence-Cancun from February 14th. These new routes follow Breeze’s first-ever international flights, which introduced Norfolk-Cancun service in January—Norfolk’s first international route in 25 years.
Spirit Airlines: Boston to Santo Domingo and Cancun
Spirit Airlines is also expanding its reach by introducing new international services from Boston. Santo Domingo will operate daily starting February 12th, while Cancun will be offered once weekly beginning February 14th, both using A320 aircraft.
IndiGo: London Heathrow Expansion
In Europe and Asia, IndiGo is expanding its long-haul footprint by launching New Delhi-London Heathrow flights on February 2nd. Operating five days a week with Boeing 787 aircraft on damp lease from Norse Atlantic Airways, the route follows IndiGo’s Mumbai-Heathrow launch in October and comes shortly after its first A321XLR services to Athens began in late January.
Maldivian: Xi’an as Fifth Chinese Destination
Rounding out February’s expansions is Maldivian, which will add Xi’an as its fifth destination in mainland China with a weekly Male-Bangkok-Xi’an service operating from January 31st through March 1st. Xi’an will host Routes Asia 2026 from April 14th to 16th.
