Winter Storm Fern Brings Changes to Marshall University Athletics Schedule

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – In response to impending winter storm projections named Winter Storm Fern, Marshall University Athletics has made several adjustments to this week’s home schedule to ensure the safety of fans and participants. These changes come after discussions with the Sun Belt Conference aimed at mitigating travel issues for all parties involved.

Men’s Basketball Adjustments

The first game on Thursday against ULM will now tip off at Noon, shifting from the previously announced 5 p.m. start time. This change was made in accordance with the Sun Belt Conference’s request to accommodate future scheduling flexibility. Gerald Harrison, Marshall Vice President and Director of Athletics, emphasized that these adjustments are necessary for safety reasons.

“Obviously, this winter storm is a very serious situation and some of these circumstances are outside of our control,” said Harrison. “After discussions regarding the safety of fans and the teams participating this weekend, the Sun Belt Conference has worked with member schools to devise a schedule that continues competition while mitigating travel issues for all parties.”

Women’s Basketball and Swimming Changes

The Marshall Women’s Basketball game against Southern Miss was moved up an hour from 7 p.m. to 6 p.m., allowing players more time to prepare for their Friday contest at ULM, which has been shifted from Saturday to the same day but earlier in the afternoon.

In addition, the Swim Meet originally scheduled for Saturday at 11 a.m. against Toledo is now at 9:30 a.m. This move aims to accommodate athletes and reduce travel stress related to the winter storm.

Marshall Athletics’ Commitment to Safety

Harrison also highlighted Marshall’s dedication to maintaining a positive fan experience, acknowledging that these changes may impact some Herd fans. However, he expressed gratitude for their understanding as the storm approaches and encouraged them to attend games this weekend if possible.

“We hate that these circumstances impact our wonderful Herd fans, but thank fans for their understanding as the storm approaches. We look forward to seeing as many members of Herd Nation here for our weekend games as possible to continue giving us the greatest home-court advantage in the Sun Belt,” said Harrison.
