Revisiting The Witcher: Behind the Scenes of Geralt’s Casting

The highly anticipated return of The Witcher has brought with it a series of changes and challenges. One significant aspect that has garnered attention is the casting decision for the role of Geralt of Rivia, as played by Henry Cavill in seasons one through three. The show’s new actor, Liam Hemsworth, will take over from Cavill for season four.

Why Hemsworth?

In an interview with IGN, series creator Lauren Schmidt Hissrich provided insight into the casting process and why Hemsworth was chosen to portray Geralt. Hissrich emphasized that finding the right actor was not just about physical appearance or fighting abilities but also about emotional depth.

“When we were looking at who potentially could fill the shoes of Geralt,” said Hissrich, “there is a physicality that has to be present… You need someone who you can imagine can excel at these action scenes, who has such a physical presence that they could be both intimidating in the story, but also, Geralt has a huge emotional side as well… What I really loved about Liam’s work that I had seen is that he was able to organically blend those two things.”

According to Hissrich, Hemsworth’s ability to bring a “soul” into his performance made him the ideal choice. She explained, β€œHe has a soul that he brings into the role, and it’s present even through action scenes when he’s fighting monsters, and it’s the same thing that’s present when he’s having conversations with Ciri or with Yennefer.”

A Decision Made Early on

It is noteworthy that this casting decision was made before the public became aware of Cavill’s exit from the show. Hemsworth was cast well in advance, ensuring a smooth transition for the upcoming season.

Hissrich further elaborated during her conversation with Hemsworth: “He didn’t have physical scenes and then emotional scenes. He was able to really carry this specific, I guess I call it soul. And when I had watched some of his work, specifically going back to The Hunger Games, that’s something that I felt from him.”

Preparing for Season 4

Netflix’s The Witcher season four is set to debut on October 30, 2025. Fans are eagerly awaiting the new adventures of Geralt and his companions in the world of The Witcher. As Hemsworth steps into the role, he will face the challenge of embodying a character who has become deeply rooted in the hearts of fans.

The transition from Cavill to Hemsworth is part of an ongoing journey for the series, reflecting the ever-evolving nature of storytelling and casting decisions in modern television. As Hissrich’s comments suggest, finding the right actor to portray Geralt was about more than just physical appearance or technical skills; it was about capturing the essence of a character with both emotional depth and action prowess.
