Weather Alert Issued for Boston Area
A weather alert has been issued for the Greater Boston area as bands of downpours and strong winds sweep through the region today. The forecast predicts that residents should prepare for heavy rainfall, particularly in upstate New York, which is expected to move into Springfield by mid-morning.
Forecast Details
The weather system is currently tracking a line of storms that will impact several key areas throughout the day. According to the meteorologist, the first area of heavier rainfall will arrive around 5:30 AM and then progress through Worcester County towards Boston by midday.
Strong Winds and Potential Damage
The strong winds associated with this storm system are expected to cause some localized damage. With many trees still retaining their leaves, the gusts could lead to fallen branches and limbs. The strongest wind gusts will likely be felt in areas south of Boston, Providence, and New Bedford, where they may reach up to 40-50 mph.
“Accompanying this line, there might also be some localized, powerful winds that can cause wind damage,” warned the meteorologist. “If we can get enough rain to fall hard enough, it could drag some of that wind down toward the surface.” The intensity and duration of these gusts will depend on how effectively they can harness the high-altitude winds.
Clearing Skies by Evening
The storms are forecasted to begin clearing out around 1:00 PM, with partial sunshine setting in for a decent sunset. The further west one travels from Boston, the more likely it is that some areas may start seeing hints of clear skies earlier in the day.
“While the downpours and strong winds are expected to continue into the evening and overnight,” said the meteorologist, “by this time tomorrow, we can look forward to a slightly clearer sky.” This weather system will bring another round of wet weather for Wednesday before transitioning back to seasonably cool conditions by next weekend.
The Boston area residents are advised to prepare accordingly. An umbrella might not be enough protection against the strong winds, and a rain jacket could be more suitable in anticipation of these storms. Commuters should consider taking advantage of their commute now rather than waiting for heavier rainfall later in the day.
