The Draft Controversy: A Backlash Unleashed

And so it begins. The summer before Ace Bailey stepped onto the Utah Jazz’s roster, he was a can’t-miss prospect with promising stats and comparisons to Kevin Durant. Yet, days before the NBA draft, controversy hit his life like a tidal wave.

But first, a quick recap: On one of those early road trips, a 6-foot-9 rookie basketball phenom climbed onto the team plane with his favorite meal: McDonald’s. Ace Bailey had a vice. “All that fast food,” he said. He once admitted to frequenting Waffle House and the Golden Arches as go-to spots.

Off-the-Court Adjustments: A Rookie Learns the NBA Way

But on that plane full of veterans, someone finally set him straight. “They’re like, ‘No, eating that stuff is not gonna help you,” Bailey said. “Honestly, coming into the NBA, it’s more than I expected, mostly off-the-court adjustments.”
The rookie arrived in Utah with controversy surrounding his draft selection. Reports surfaced that he didn’t want to play for certain teams in the lottery, including the Jazz, and his stock fell as a result. Fans rushed to their own assumptions—good and bad.

Ace Bailey’s Performance: Steady Improvement

But on the court, Ace has been good but not great—averaging 11 points as mostly a third option. Off the floor, teammates swear by him—but it takes time to rewire public perception. Bailey’s teammate Kevin Love believes in his potential: “He’s funny and goofy. Never runs out of energy.” Harper, who went No. 2 to the Spurs, also defended Bailey during their high school days.

Lessons Learned: A Rookie’s Growth Journey

Into the chaos (Noah K. Murray | AP). At Rutgers, Ace Bailey was a freshman phenom.

But this summer—when Utah drafted him fifth overall and heaped its hopes onto a teenager—everything Bailey knew seemingly shifted. Pikiell, his college coach, had developed his own rule coaching Bailey last year: “If anybody calls about Ace Bailey, I f—ing call back right away.” Pikiell loved talking about his star. But those calls became more contentious days before the draft.

Bailey parted ways with his agent and opted for a more experienced one in September. Months later, he said he didn’t regret any part of the draft process. “The goal was to be here,” he insisted. Now he just had to convince everyone else.

Back on stable ground (Trent Nelson | The Salt Lake Tribune), Bailey took a similar approach to win over his organization. He wasn’t going to tell them he wanted to be in Utah; he’d show them. And from a basketball perspective, his new head coach also wanted Bailey to ease into his new surroundings.

Hardy asked for fewer threes, more focus on making the right plays and building habits off the court. Bailey hasn’t been the Jazz’s primary scorer on purpose, allowing him to develop a more well-rounded attack for the future.

A Future Star in the Making

And so, the question remains: Who is the real Ace Bailey? Well, like his diet, he’s trying to figure that out. But he’s definitely not who everyone thinks he is. “People shouldn’t make assumptions,” his teammate Kevin Love said. “Just get to know him.”
