UnitedHealthcare CEO Murder Accused’s Musical Escapades in Prison

Luigi Mangione, the man accused of murdering UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, has found solace in pop music during his time at the Metropolitan Detention Center. In a letter obtained by TMZ, Mangione revealed that he has started listening to Taylor Swift and Charli XCX on his prison tablet.

According to the letter shared online by a supporter, Mangione stated he downloaded songs by both artists last week after hearing about their popularity on social media. “I’ve never really listened to either of them,” Mangione wrote, explaining that a “phony list” of his favorite artists had gone viral. Curious about the hype, he decided to give it a try.

Mangione’s Musical Discovery

The letter dated 3 June detailed Mangione’s musical journey inside prison walls. He began by playing Taylor Swift’s “Cardigan” from her 2020 album Folklore while walking laps in his cell block. While still processing the new additions to his playlist, Mangione also expressed gratitude for small comforts like meals and fan letters amid his legal battles.

“I’ve never really listened to either of them,” wrote Mangione. “But after the hype on social media, I decided to try it out. I played Taylor Swift’s ‘Cardigan’ while walking laps in my cell block.”

A Model Prisoner and Legal Battles

Despite his legal troubles, Mangione has maintained a positive attitude during his time at the Metropolitan Detention Center. His lawyer, Arthur Aidala, told People that Mangione had been “a model prisoner,” following rules and even helping new inmates adjust to life inside the detention center.

Mangione faces multiple state and federal charges related to the murder of Brian Thompson on 4 December 2024. Two out of eleven state charges were dropped in September due to a lack of evidence, but he still faces four federal charges, including one that could carry the death penalty if convicted.

Mangione’s legal defense fund has raised over $1.3 million from supporters who continue to rally behind him as he awaits trial. His newfound appreciation for pop music is just one of the ways in which he maintains his spirits while navigating the complexities of a high-profile murder case.

“I’ve never really listened to either of them,” Mangione wrote, reflecting on his musical discovery. “But after the hype on social media, I decided to try it out. I played Taylor Swift’s ‘Cardigan’ while walking laps in my cell block.”
