Mets Lose Out on Former All-Star in Free Agency

The New York Mets reportedly lost out on retaining former All-Star outfielder Cedric Mullins, who is now headed back to the American League East with a new team. Mullins, known for his impressive 2021 season where he hit 30 home runs and batted .291, was part of the Mets’ lineup until the end of the regular season.

Acquired by the Mets in July from the Baltimore Orioles, Mullins struggled with his performance down the stretch. In just 42 games as their primary center fielder, he slashed a meager .182/.284/.281, leading to speculation that the team might part ways with him.

Mullins’ Journey with Baltimore Orioles

From 2018 to 2025, Mullins played for the Baltimore Orioles. During his tenure there, he achieved significant milestones such as hitting a career-high 30 home runs and batting .291 in 2021, which earned him a spot on the American League All-Star team that year. He also won the Silver Slugger Award for his outstanding performance at the plate.

However, from 2022 to 2024, Mullins’ bat faltered, and he struggled to replicate the form displayed in 2021. Despite managing a respectable .244/.311/.407 batting line over three seasons, his on-base percentage dropped significantly, leading some to question his long-term viability at the major league level.

New Chapter with Tampa Bay Rays

According to reports from Mark Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times, Mullins has agreed to a one-year contract with the Tampa Bay Rays for 2026. This move comes as the team faces potential weaknesses in their outfield, particularly in center field.

The Rays were considering younger players like Chandler Simpson and Jonny DeLuca, but both have yet to prove themselves at the MLB level. Mullins’ experience and proven ability to hit for power make him a valuable addition to their lineup as they look to improve their roster ahead of next season.

Mullins will now aim to reclaim his All-Star form in 2026, hoping to secure a longer-term contract with the Rays or another team. His return to the American League East could also present an opportunity for him to face some familiar opponents and teammates from his time with the Orioles.
