The Steelers’ Coaching Search: Ejiro Evero’s Interview
PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers, embarking on their fourth coaching search since 1969, have put in interview requests for several candidates. One of the most notable is defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero from the Carolina Panthers.
The Search Process
Following Mike Tomlin’s departure on Tuesday, Art Rooney II and Omar Khan are leading the charge to find a new head coach for the Steelers. The process is already underway, with interview requests extended to several candidates, including Nate Scheelhaase, Chris Shula, Anthony Weaver, Brian Flores, and Jesse Minter.
Ejiro Evero: A Detailed Look at His Past
Evero, born in England, has a diverse background in coaching. He began his NFL journey with the San Francisco 49ers and Green Bay Packers before joining the Los Angeles Rams as their safeties coach from 2017 to 2020. In 2021, he was elevated to secondary and passing game coordinator.
His most recent stop has been serving as the defensive coordinator for both Denver Broncos (2022) and Carolina Panthers (since 2023).
In his time with the Panthers, Evero’s defense allowed a modest 293.9 yards per game but struggled to score, ranking 29th in points per game at 24.5. In 2024, without Pro Bowl defensive tackle Derrick Brown, their performance declined significantly, allowing 404.5 yards and 31.4 points per game.
Art Rooney’s Vision for the Next Coach
In a news conference held on Wednesday, Art Rooney II expressed an open-minded approach to finding the next head coach. “Can I sign up for another Chuck Noll or another Bill Cowher or another Mike Tomlin? Sure,” he said. “But we’re not going to narrow the box too much. … I think if I’ve learned anything, it’s to have an open mind.”
Rooney emphasized leadership as a top priority: “Number one, really in my mind, is leadership and really trusting that this person can stand up in front of your team day in and day out, hold their attention, and have them motivated to do what they do. That’s the most important part.”
The Steelers are expected to continue reaching out to candidates within the coming hours and days. This page will be updated as the process continues.
