New Chapter for the Iconic Sci-Fi Franchise

The iconic sci-fi franchise “Stargate” has seen a new lease of life, with Amazon MGM Studios ordering a series based on its intellectual property. This news comes after the company’s acquisition of MGM in 2022 for $8.5 billion, marking one of the first major greenlights under the leadership of Peter Friedlander as Head of Global TV.

Creator and Showrunner

Martin Gero, a veteran showrunner known for his work on “Blindspot” at NBC, will helm this new series. Gero has deep roots in the Stargate universe, having worked across all three original series as a writer-producer. He expressed his excitement about leading this franchise into its next phase, saying, “Twenty years ago, my first real job in television was as a Story Editor on Stargate: Atlantis.

I spent five years at the franchise working across all three series, Stargate taught me everything about making television — it’s written into my DNA. I’m beyond thrilled that Amazon MGM Studios has entrusted me with guiding this incredible franchise into its next phase.”

Creative Team and Development

Joining Gero in the executive producer role are Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell of Safehouse Pictures, and Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich, who produced the 1994 Stargate movie. Brad Wright and Joe Mallozzi, longtime creative leaders within the Stargate TV universe, will serve as consulting producers. Nick Pepper from Amazon MGM Studios added, “Stargate is an enduring, iconic franchise that has captivated audiences for decades with its bold exploration of humanity’s place in the cosmos. In partnership with our extraordinary creative team, we’re honored to open this next gate to bring a visionary new chapter of this beloved franchise to our global Prime Video audience.”

Stargate Franchise Overview

The “Stargate” franchise, launched with Emmerich’s 1994 feature film, has expanded over three decades. It includes multiple television series such as Stargate SG-1 (1997-2007), Stargate Atlantis (2004-2009), and Stargate Universe (2009-2011). Other series include the animated Stargate Infinity (2002-2003) and web series Stargate Origins (2018).

The new series will be part of a growing lineup of MGM projects on Prime Video, alongside existing prequels like “Elle,” which is set to debut soon. Other planned projects include the live-action adaptation of “Tomb Raider” starring Sophie Turner and “Barbershop,” starring Jermaine Fowler.

Industry Context

The announcement underscores Amazon’s commitment to expanding its content library with iconic intellectual properties. With this new series, Amazon MGM Studios aims to continue the rich legacy of the Stargate franchise while introducing it to a new generation of fans through Prime Video. This move also highlights the growing competition in the streaming space as major tech companies continue to invest heavily in original programming.
