New Head Coach for Stanford University Football
In a significant move for the Stanford Cardinal football program, Tavita Pritchard has been named as the new head coach. This hire marks an exciting chapter for the team following the departure of interim coach Frank Reich and Troy Taylor, who was let go amid off-field controversies.
Pritchard’s Journey
Tavita Pritchard played quarterback for Stanford from 2006 to 2009, starting in 19 games during his tenure. He then transitioned into coaching, joining the Cardinal staff as a graduate assistant and progressing through various roles including defensive assistant before moving to offensive positions such as running backs coach, wide receivers coach, and finally offensive coordinator/quarterback coach.
Pritchard’s experience didn’t stop there; he joined the Washington Commanders in 2023 as their quarterbacks coach. In this role, he helped develop Jayden Daniels, who won NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year after leading his team to an NFC Championship game in 2024.
Stanford’s Recent Struggles
The hiring of Pritchard comes at a critical time for Stanford. The program has struggled significantly since 2018, having not won a bowl game and only managed four wins in the 2020 season. Under Troy Taylor, who took over after Jim Harbaugh left to coach the San Francisco 49ers, Stanford’s record was dismal, with just three victories in each of the last two seasons.
Andrew Luck, now serving as general manager and leading the coaching search, highlighted Pritchard’s qualities, emphasizing his ability to build culture, connect with talent, and teach football at a high level. “Tavita Pritchard is exactly the right head coach at the right time,” Luck said in a statement. “He has the vision and leadership needed to lead Stanford back to success.”
Upcoming Challenges
Pritchard will step into his role immediately following Stanford’s game against No. 9 Notre Dame on Saturday. The challenge ahead is considerable, as the team aims to rebuild a program that has faced numerous setbacks in recent years. With high expectations from both fans and administration, Pritchard’s first season will be crucial for both the future of Stanford football and his own legacy.
As Pritchard returns to his alma mater, he brings with him valuable experience and the support of a coaching staff that understands the unique dynamics of collegiate football. The coming weeks will provide insight into how well these elements come together under his leadership.
