Breaking Into the Ring: Sydney Sweeney’s New Biopic “Christy”
Sydney Sweeney, the breakout star of Euphoria, is stepping into a new role that requires not just acting prowess but also intense physical training. The actress is starring in the upcoming boxing drama “Christy,” which will hit theaters on November 6, 2025.
The Role and Its Challenges
Sweeney plays Christy Martin, a real-life boxing legend whose life was marked by both triumphs and tragedies. The actress delves deep into the character’s psyche, exploring her struggles with domestic violence and the public scrutiny she faced as a professional athlete.
“I love taking somebody who, on the surface or on the page, might feel or look or have been talked about in a certain way and flip it on its head and show people that they need to see something for themselves,” Sweeney says. “Christy had her own fights within the ring and outside the ring, and I have my own fights within my respective ring and outside my own ring.”
Preparation and Training
Sweeney’s career has seen her take on a variety of roles, from small independent films to major productions. For “Christy,” however, she had to prepare both physically and mentally. The actress, who grew up in Spokane playing sports before moving to Los Angeles for acting opportunities, had some background in kickboxing.
“I spent my youth in Spokane playing a variety of sports before beginning to practice kickboxing when traveling back and forth to Los Angeles,” Sweeney explains. “While my previous physical training helped me with the role, getting into Christy’s state of mind was just as important.”
Collaboration and Trust
The film also features Ben Foster in a dual role as both Christy’s coach and abuser. Working with her co-star, Sweeney found it crucial to build trust on set.
“We both don’t like to rehearse. We like to know what the physicality of the scene is and where the cameras are going to be, but then we want to feel and listen and explore within every single scene that we’re in,” she says.
Future Projects and Return to Washington
Beyond “Christy,” Sweeney has a busy schedule lined up. She will next appear in the thriller “The Housemaid” and is reprising her role in Euphoria. Additionally, she plans to star in an upcoming film adaptation of the video game “Split Fiction” and a new project from director Justin Lin.
Despite her growing fame, Sweeney remains committed to returning to Washington State for filming opportunities. “I’d love to film up there,” she says. “That’d make me so happy, I think about it all the time.” “Washington gives you it all!
There’s a few that if I can get the correct tax incentives, then it could work up there.”
“Christy” is set to open at area theaters on November 6, 2025. Sweeney’s dedication and commitment to her craft continue to shine through in each of her roles, making “Christy” an exciting addition to her growing filmography.
