A Heartfelt Reunion: The Quiet Tribe of Caregivers
Sheinelle Jones, co-host of the popular morning show TODAY with Jenna & Sheinelle, takes a moment to honor the quiet tribe of caregivers who supported her and her family during their most trying times. Uche Ojeh, her husband of 17 years, passed away in May 2025 after battling an aggressive form of brain cancer at age 45.
Reflecting on these final moments, Sheinelle explains, “When you have a cancer diagnosis, there are health care workers, doctors, nurses. And when I think about that, there were a few… who kind of became our team.” These caregivers didn’t just provide medical support; they formed an emotional bond with the Jones family.
The Quiet Tribe
Jazzie Stickle, a home health aide, was known for dressing Uche in his favorite jersey and setting up the TV so he could watch games with his kids. “She just had such a beautiful temperament with him,” Sheinelle notes.
Denise James Wright took on an almost elder or aunt role, bonding over kickboxing and soccer, listening to Afrobeats, Uche’s favorite type of music. “I understood him. He understood me,” Denise reflects. “She was his ride or die,” Sheinelle adds. “She was with him all the way until the end, literally.”
Overnight Caregivers
Caregivers Chanel Duff and Nykyra Owens told Sheinelle to relax and let them handle things so she could be more present for Uche. “You know what, sweetie, you be the wife and we can do everything else,” Chanel said, adding, “You just be his wife.”
The Special Moment with Jessica Goldstein
Speech pathologist Jessica Goldstein helped Uche with a special phrase. “The last text message I have from her was a video (of Jessica and Uche) and she was like, We’ve been working on this,” Sheinelle recalls. “And it was, ‘I love you, Sheinelle.’ And she cheers in the background.” This moment stands out as particularly meaningful.
A Bond that Transcends
These caregivers, whom Sheinelle calls “angels on earth,” left a lasting impression during a time of devastating loss. “It’s a bond that I would never wish on anyone, but it’s just so special,” she explains. “Honestly, the only reason I even have the strength to talk about it is because I believe they are heroes.”
During their reunion, Jessica Goldstein shared how health care workers often put up walls to protect themselves from the hard realities of their work. “But let me tell you,” she said, “Uche broke down those walls within the first minute of meeting. He was kind and generous, and it was palpable.” This reflects the emotional impact Uche had on everyone involved.
The story of Sheinelle Jones’ late husband Uche and his caregivers is a testament to the human spirit and the bonds formed in the most challenging times. It’s a reminder that even during hardship, there are angels who come to light the way with kindness and support.
