Dan Barefoot: A Homegrown Olympian Takes Flight

Richland, Pennsylvania—The excitement in Cambria County reached new heights this week as local favorite Dan Barefoot hit the ice and snow at the 2026 Winter Olympic Games. Barefoot, a native of Geistown, made his debut in Italy on Thursday, opening with two runs that positioned him 19th overall.

From Local Hero to Global Stage

Barefoot’s journey from Richland High School to the world stage is nothing short of inspiring. His first run saw a time of 57.47 seconds, and he improved slightly in the second heat with a 57.22-second performance. Despite these times, Barefoot remains optimistic about his chances in the final two runs scheduled for Friday afternoon at 1:30 and 3:30 PM.

Community Spirit on Display

Richland High School students showed their support by participating in a USA Spirit Day. Wearing red, white, and blue, they demonstrated their enthusiasm for Barefoot’s Olympic adventure. Principal Tim Regan expressed pride in the community’s response:

“It’s just something that they’re talking about all the time and they’re educating themselves,” said Regan.

The school has become a hub of Olympic fever, with teachers incorporating lessons on the Olympics into classroom activities. Students are eagerly following Barefoot’s progress, making it a topic of discussion throughout the day.

A Buzzing Community

Regan noted that the skeleton event is gaining traction among students and staff. “Teachers have done some information or some lessons in classrooms just on the Olympics itself,” he continued. “So, it’s just a pretty cool time.” Barefoot’s performance has sparked interest not only in him but also in the unique sport of skeleton racing.

As the final two runs approach, all eyes will be on Dan Barefoot and his quest to improve his standing in Italy. The community behind him is ready to cheer him on from home.
