Key Points in Review: Raptors’ Preseason Observations
The Toronto Raptors have kicked off their 2025/26 NBA season with a solid start, despite some concerns over key players. Former All-Star Brandon Ingram has faced significant challenges due to injuries but remains optimistic about his future performance.
Ingram’s Struggles and Resilience
Brandon Ingram, who was acquired from the New Orleans Pelicans in February 2024, has struggled with various injuries over the past year. In a recent interview with The Athletic, Ingram reflected on his experience: “There was a time when I did not necessarily lose love for the game, but I just had a lot of uncertainty,” he stated. “Going on two months, three months with the ankle. ‘When am I gonna be healthy again?’ That dawned on me a little bit.”
Ingram acknowledged that overworking has contributed to his injuries and emphasized the importance of knowing when to rest: “I think most of my injuries have come from overworking,” he said. “It’s about knowing when to rest, when to be out on the floor, when to go hard, when certain days are mental days. It’s all about that … I’m just trying to do everything I can do that’s in my control.”
Leadership and Team Dynamics
Ingram has taken a leadership role within the team, both on and off the court. According to Sportsnet.ca, he is focused on proving himself rather than trying to disprove doubters: “I know my own vision for where I want to be and that’s at the top of the league,” Ingram stated. “I keep that in mind. You work for it and you wait for it to show up.”
Ingram has started well with the Raptors, averaging 22.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 1.0 steal through two games this season (32.0 minutes per game).
His poise on the offensive end was praised by teammate Michael Porter Jr., who noted: “What I was most impressed with was how poised we were on the offensive end. When the game slowed down and we had to go into our execution, everybody was poised and we just got the best shot.”
Barrett’s Focus on Performance
RJ Barrett, eligible for a contract extension before this season began, has opted to focus on performance rather than discussing his future with the Raptors. “Realistically, those things don’t really happen until the end of the season anyway,” Barrett said about potential new deal talks. “I’m not really thinking about it. OK, I lied, I’m thinking about it. But more so I’m trying to focus on winning and making an impact here.”
Barrett’s agents did not have serious discussions with the team regarding a contract extension at this stage.
Murray-Boyles’ Progress
Collin Murray-Boyles, the Raptors’ lottery pick, is inching closer to his regular season debut. He has been listed as day-to-day due to a right forearm strain and is questionable for Sunday’s game against Dallas. His availability will be crucial as he seeks to establish himself in the team.
The Toronto Raptors are off to a promising start despite some challenges, with Ingram leading by example and Barrett and Murray-Boyles working towards their goals within the team structure.
