From Passion to Partnership: A Journey in Early Childhood Education
The journey of Kids in Christ Academy, under the leadership of Director Christina Puckett, has been one of passion and dedication since its inception in 1989. Over the years, Puckett navigated through various challenges, including managing her own businesses starting in 2007. However, it was not until 2020 that she encountered LINC’s early childhood program support team, which would become a pivotal turning point for her center.
“The parents get so excited,” Puckett shared during a recent visit. “Then when they go out the door and another parent is coming in, they say, ‘Wait till you see this place!
It’s beautiful. It’s beautiful.’” This enthusiasm stems from not only the physical transformation of her childcare space but also from the support she received to enhance the quality of care for the children.
Support Through Training and Resources
LINC provided comprehensive training programs that focused on classroom management, child supervision, engaging lessons, and creating safe learning environments. These resources were crucial in helping Puckett’s staff adapt to new methodologies and techniques. According to Sarah Ramirez, the LINC Early Childhood Coordinator, “From birth to age 5 is a most critical point for a child to learn.
It sets the foundation for learning.”
The support extended beyond training sessions; it included practical assistance such as bringing in better furniture and rearranging learning areas. This collaborative effort not only improved the physical space but also ensured that Puckett’s center was equipped with state-of-the-art tools necessary for early childhood development.
A New Home: 39th and Troost Avenue
The new location at 39th and Troost Avenue in Kansas City represents a significant milestone for Kids in Christ Academy. The center now occupies a larger space, allowing it to accommodate more families and offering an enhanced experience. This strategic move aligns with LINC’s mission to support and strengthen early childhood programs within the community.
“Like me,” Ramirez said during the visit, “you’ve watched kids grow and you know that they like to see a happy, safe place.” The new site features bright classrooms filled with engaging materials and educational posters. A large enclosed courtyard provides a secure outdoor play area for the children, ensuring their safety while they explore and learn.
Impact Beyond the Walls
The success of Kids in Christ Academy extends beyond the immediate impact on its students. LINC’s efforts to support early childhood education programs have reached more than 416 children across seven centers as of 2024. This collaborative work underscores the broader mission of LINC, which is to engage the Kansas City community in creating the best services delivery system for children and families.
“We’ve done so much together,” Puckett reflected on her journey with LINC. “You stuck by me through the pandemic.
And here we are.” The partnership between Kids in Christ Academy and LINC exemplifies how local organizations can come together to make a significant positive impact on the community’s youngest members.
As the center continues to thrive, it stands as a testament to the power of collaboration and support in early childhood education. With Puckett at the helm and LINC’s unwavering commitment, Kids in Christ Academy is well-positioned to continue shaping young lives for years to come.
