Ashes of Creation: The Collapse of a Crowdfunded Dream
And so, the saga unfolds. Ashes of Creation, the ambitious MMO that had the gaming community buzzing back in 2017 with its $3.2 million Kickstarter campaign, is now left in tatters.
By December 2024, the game had finally hit Early Access on Steam after significant development and anticipation. Yet, by January 2025, the director Steven Sharif resigned “in protest,” reportedly along with much of the senior team at Intrepid Studios.
Sharif claimed that the management board had asked him to do things he “could not ethically support.”
And here’s where it gets interesting: following his departure, the Board issued WARN Act notices—a clear warning for a mass layoff. The exact number of remaining employees is unclear.
The Steam Investigation
Now, according to a redditor named LawdAizen, Steam is “investigating” after they received complaints about the situation from fans and potentially from Intrepid Studios themselves. A Steam representative confirmed, “We are aware of the issue and are currently investigating this further.”
A Game in Flux
While Ashes of Creation’s team posted a brief statement on their site, it barely scratches the surface. The game is rife with bugs and quality-of-life issues, as reflected by its “Mixed” Steam score. Negative reviews pour in: “scam rugpull of a game,” “Ashes is officially cancelled,” and “the game was a cash grab.”
Director of communications Margaret Krohn confirmed her departure on LinkedIn, stating, “My time at Intrepid Studios has officially ended… It wasn’t what I expected.
But I’m holding onto the good because there was so much of it.” She added, “I don’t work there anymore, so I can’t answer that for you.”
The situation is dire, not just for the studio but also for fans who were eagerly awaiting a return to an old-school MMORPG experience. It’s clear that Ashes of Creation’s journey from crowdfunding success to this current state has been fraught with challenges.
Lessons in Game Development
This is more than just another indie game failure; it serves as a stark reminder of the complexities involved in bringing a fully realized MMO to market. The ethical dilemmas faced by developers, the importance of clear communication between management and staff, and the need for robust quality assurance processes—these are all critical lessons that the gaming industry should take note of.
You might think this is new, but it’s not. This is a tale as old as time in the MMO world, with countless stories of grand ambitions met with crushing realities. The question remains: can Ashes of Creation rise from these ashes or will it remain a cautionary tale?
