New ‘Star Trek’ Movie in the Works from ‘Dungeons & Dragons’ Duo
Home Film News announced on November 14, 2025, that Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, known for their work in “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” and the screenplay for “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” are set to write, produce, and direct a new “Star Trek” film. This move aims to revitalize the franchise after it has been dormant since 2016.
The new project will not be a continuation of J.J. Abrams’ reboot or feature any actors from those movies, including Chris Pine, who starred in Goldstein and Daley’s “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.” The film is described as being disconnected from any previous or current television series, movie, or prior movie development projects.
Paramount has been trying to mount a new Star Trek film for nearly a decade.
In 2024, Variety reported that Steve Yockey was writing the final chapter of “Trek” starring Pine, Zachary Quinto, and Zoe Saldaña. Toby Haynes had also been tapped to direct an origin story written by Seth Grahame-Smith.
However, both productions appear to be stalled. Paramount has prioritized this project since David Ellison’s Skydance took control of the company in August 2024. Daley and Goldstein have a strong background in producing films like “Mayday,” starring Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh, which they produced through their GoldDay banner.
Background on Star Trek Film Development
The development process for a new Star Trek film has been challenging. In 2016, “Star Trek Beyond” opened to mixed reviews. Following this release, various attempts were made to revive the franchise, including Chris Hemsworth almost returning as Captain Kirk’s father and Quentin Tarantino directing a movie set in a world of 1930s gangsters.
However, both projects ultimately failed to materialize.
Noah Hawley and Matt Shakman each got close enough to build sets for their respective films but eventually moved onto other franchises due to lack of progress. Paramount has faced numerous challenges in reviving the Star Trek franchise, making this new project a significant development.
Industry Context
Daley and Goldstein have a proven track record in producing successful films such as “Mayday” and “Game Night.” Their involvement with Star Trek is seen as a strategic move by Paramount to breathe new life into the franchise. The success of their previous projects, including “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,” suggests that they are well-equipped to handle this high-profile assignment.
The choice not to feature established characters from J.J. Abrams’ reboot indicates a fresh direction for the Star Trek franchise. This decision could attract new audiences while still satisfying longtime fans who appreciate the diversity of storytelling within the series.
