New Training Center Supports Manufacturing Jobs in South Carolina
South Carolina is stepping up to meet a significant challenge in its economic development efforts: filling thousands of jobs that are set to arrive with new manufacturing investments. The latest initiative, the opening of Cornerstone workforce training center in Richland County on November 6, 2025, aims to equip residents with the necessary skills for these positions.
Scout Motors Leads the Way
Among the major manufacturers looking to establish a presence in South Carolina is Scout Motors. The company has committed to creating over 4,000 jobs as it builds a multibillion-dollar facility just north of Columbia. This investment underscores the state’s attractiveness for businesses seeking to tap into its skilled workforce and supportive economic incentives.
Cornerstone Workforce Training Facility
The newly opened Cornerstone facility serves as a pivotal part of readySC, the workforce training division of the Technical College System in South Carolina. The $5 million space was funded by contributions from Richland County, the South Carolina Technical College System, and state funds. This investment aligns with a broader strategy to ensure that local residents are well-prepared for employment opportunities.
“We’re creating and bringing in companies, but we want to make sure that our residents right here in South Carolina are ready and trained to get those jobs,” said Jesica Mackey, Richland County Council Chair. The facility is currently hosting pre-hire training for Scout Motors employees, marking the beginning of a comprehensive approach to workforce development.
Government Support and Economic Impact
The state government has been instrumental in fostering these economic developments. Governor Henry McMaster and other officials toured the new center, emphasizing its role as both an economic tool and a win for South Carolinians’ quality of life. The $1.3 billion incentive package approved by the General Assembly in 2023 is just one example of how state leaders are supporting businesses like Scout Motors.
“This is what was pioneered in South Carolina,” said Harry Lightsey, South Carolina Secretary of Commerce. “It’s been copied in other states, but never as good as what we do here in South Carolina. Having that is a great asset, and that is a big part of what brings companies to South Carolina.”
Future Prospects for the Training Center
The success of the Cornerstone facility extends beyond Scout Motors’ current needs. In the future, more industry employers could use it as a training ground for their workers. Midlands Technical College and Trident Technical College are partners in this initiative, ensuring that the training aligns with broader educational goals.
“We’ve, for the last 50 years, brought projects into the state of South Carolina,” said Tim Hardee, president of the Technical College System. “On average, 97% of the jobs go to South Carolinians.” This track record speaks volumes about the readiness and capability of the local workforce.
As manufacturing jobs continue to grow in number, initiatives like the Cornerstone training center will play a crucial role in ensuring that South Carolina remains competitive in attracting new industries. The state’s commitment to workforce development is not just a short-term solution but a long-term investment in its economic future.
