The Unsettling Coaching Change
Tariq Boney described the last month as “insane,” reflecting on the sudden and significant changes in Michigan football. The firing of head coach Jim Harbaugh, followed by his arrest, left many players and recruits reeling with disbelief.
“Some things went in a crazy direction,” Boney told The Ann Arbor News/MLive. “I was in disbelief, honestly. It was a big shock to me. I never thought that would happen.”
Boney’s Commitment and Future Plans
Despite the turmoil, Boney reaffirmed his commitment to Michigan. He signed his paperwork on December 3, 2024, to enroll in the summer of 2025 and join the team for the 2026 season. “I was really bought into Michigan no matter what,” said Boney. “That came from my early commitment; I committed in the spring and didn’t take any visits anywhere else.”
Interim coach Biff Poggi has been reassuring Boney, reiterating the school’s commitment to honoring their scholarship and financial agreement. Now, Boney is eagerly waiting to hear from new head coach Kyle Whittingham.
A Player with Versatile Skills
Boney believes his diverse skillset will allow him to fit into any defensive scheme. As a senior at St. John’s College, he racked up 20 tackles for a loss, 12 sacks, forced two fumbles, and broke up six passes. He also has experience as a running back, rushing for 1,897 yards and 29 touchdowns as a junior.
“Just accepting him, getting to know him and him accepting me,” Boney said. “I want to know where I fit in the scheme and where I’ll be on the field.” Until then, he’s preparing for Saturday’s Under Armour All-America game, “trying to rise my stock and be the type of player that I am.”
“The motor never stops running,” Boney said. “I give my 100-percent effort every day, every practice, every workout.”
Looking Ahead with Optimism
Boney’s commitment to Michigan stands as a testament to his faith in the program and its ability to recover from this coaching change. Meanwhile, new head coach Whittingham is expected to meet with players and recruits, including Boney, to ensure continuity and stability.
Magic moments like these often highlight the resilience of college football players, who not only face the challenges on the field but also navigate the complex dynamics off it. For Tariq Boney, this journey continues as he awaits his new coach’s guidance and looks forward to a bright future at Michigan.
