Carlos Alcaraz has started his journey towards the year-end world number one ranking with a resounding victory over Alex de Minaur in the Jimmy Connors Group of the ATP Finals. The 22-year-old Spaniard, who withdrew due to injury in 2022 and struggled in his previous finals appearances, is determined to turn things around this season.
Speaking before the match, Alcaraz expressed his renewed motivation: “I’ve been struggling in the past three years to come to the end of the year with energy and motivation. This year is a little bit different,” he said. “I’m really proud about the way I’ve been doing things to come here with motivation.”
Alcaraz’s Match Against De Minaur
The match began with Alcaraz racing to an early lead but missing three break points for a 5-1 advantage. In the tie-break, de Minaur’s trademark fight took him close before he conceded it. The second set saw three consecutive breaks of serve, two in favor of Alcaraz, putting him firmly in charge. Despite De Minaur’s efforts to stay competitive, Alcaraz secured a well-deserved victory.
Zverev Dominates Shelton
Meanwhile, Alexander Zverev produced an impressive serving performance against American debutant Ben Shelton. The 28-year-old German lost only one of 17 points on serve in the first set and ten of fifty-four across the match, finishing with an 81% first-serve percentage. His relentless serving was crucial as he rallied from a 6-3 deficit in the second-set tie-break to advance.
Reflecting on his performance, Zverev stated, “I knew against Ben that I had to have a very high first-serve percentage, because he’s so aggressive on the second serve. I knew that would be one of the key factors today and I’m super pleased with this win.”

Alcaraz faces competition from Jannik Sinner for the top ranking in tennis. Both players have split the four Grand Slam titles between them, but their paths will cross later in the tournament if they reach the final.
