A Tragic End to a Controversial Encounter
Karen Kulla, the mother of Savannah Kulla, a 29-year-old woman who was fatally shot in Brampton on Tuesday by Anthony Deschepper, an individual previously linked to an Amber Alert, shared her heart-wrenching story with Global News. The incident occurred when Deschepper and Savannah were meeting at a parking lot to spend time with their baby girl.
Amber Alert and Intimate Partner Violence
On Tuesday around 2 p.m., Peel Regional Police received reports of a woman shot in the parking lot of a shopping plaza near Airport Road and Queen Street East in Brampton. Savannah Kulla, who was with Deschepper, was later pronounced dead at the scene.
Karen recounted that her daughter had expressed concerns about staying with Deschepper, stating, “If I stay with him he’s gonna end up killing me,” a few months prior to her death. Despite Karen’s concerns and suggestion of obtaining a restraining order, Savannah reportedly told her mother, “it’s not going to do anything, mom.
He just won’t leave me alone.”
The Amber Alert was issued across Ontario shortly after the shooting incident for an 18-month-old girl who had been seen with Deschepper in his vehicle. However, she was found safe and sound with family members.
Fatal Shooting of Deschepper
Following the initial shooting incident, Deschepper became a suspect in another Amber Alert issued by Niagara Regional Police late Tuesday evening for an incident involving a one-year-old girl. By early Wednesday morning, Deschepper was found in a vehicle near Thorold, Ontario, where he was shot and killed by police during an interaction.
Karen Kulla expressed disbelief at the events leading to her daughter’s death: “I just can’t believe that she’s gone,” she said. “She’s so, so beautiful. She stood her ground on things usually and she was smart and pretty and we loved her.”
Investigations and Future Implications
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) of Ontario has been investigating the fatal shooting incident involving Deschepper and is conducting a parallel investigation with Peel Regional Police. The SIU will collect evidence, interview witnesses, and review surveillance video to understand the sequence of events leading to Deschepper’s death.
Deschepper had previously faced firearm-related charges in 2023 for discharging a gun at a Brampton residence. He was out on bail awaiting trial scheduled for 2026 but was shot and killed by police during an interaction involving a one-year-old girl in Niagara.
This tragic series of events highlights the complexities and dangers associated with intimate partner violence, as well as the challenges faced by law enforcement agencies when dealing with such cases. The ongoing investigations aim to uncover all details surrounding these incidents and provide closure for the families involved.
