Weight Loss Journey of ‘Mike & Molly’ Star Billy Gardell

Billy Gardell, the beloved star of “Mike & Molly,” has opened up about his significant weight loss journey to People magazine. The 56-year-old actor and comedian spoke candidly about his struggle with weight since adolescence and his eventual decision to undergo bariatric surgery.

From Comedy to Weight Struggles

Gardell, who rose to fame as a young comedian, confessed that he turned to food for comfort during challenging times. He explained, “I was medicating my emotions and my fears with food, and I was also celebrating my victories with food. You’re eating to deflect your feelings when they’re bad or enhance them when they’re good, and both of those things are poison pills.” This pattern of using food as a coping mechanism led him to develop type 2 diabetes by the time the pandemic hit in 2020.

Turning Point: The Perfect Storm

“When the first wave hit, and they punched up that list of high-risk conditions, I had all of them. Overweight, sleep apnea, smoker, type 2 diabetes, asthma… It was really the perfect storm,” Gardell stated. This critical juncture prompted him to take drastic action and make a permanent change in his life.

Bariatric Surgery and Mindset Shift

In 2021, Gardell decided to undergo bariatric surgery as part of his weight loss journey. He also focused on changing his relationship with food by shifting his mindset. “It really came down to a shift in everything I think about food,” he said. “Food is fuel; it’s not reward, it’s not soothing, it’s not medication. I had to get beyond my emotional relationship with food.” Gardell worked closely with Dr. Philippe Quilici and nutritionist Teri Hlubik, whom he described as his “dream team.”

Staying on Track

Gardell has maintained a healthy lifestyle through diet and exercise over the past four years. He currently fluctuates between 210 and 215 pounds, feeling strong and energetic. “Losing weight saved my life,” he emphasized. Gardell follows a strict routine, including eating a turkey sausage breakfast sandwich each morning, cottage cheese and fruit in the afternoon, and avoiding fried or sugary foods for dinner. He also drinks 75 ounces of water daily and works out three to four times per week.

Life After Weight Loss

The actor has seen significant improvements in his health, including the complete resolution of his type 2 diabetes. “I feel strong. I have energy,” Gardell said. He is now able to engage in activities like surfing and horseback riding, which he previously couldn’t enjoy due to his weight.

Gardell also mentioned that he can now walk into a store and buy a shirt off the rack, something he considered a major accomplishment.

“They want me around longer, God bless them,” he said of his wife Patty and son Will. “When a man knows what he’s fighting for, he’s capable of doing some amazing things, and those two are worth fighting for.”

As Gardell reflects on his journey, he encourages others to take control of their lives and make positive changes. His story serves as an inspiration for many who struggle with weight and seek a healthier lifestyle.
