Mid-Michigan Schools Cancel Classes Amidst Bitter Cold Weather

MID-MICHIGAN (WJRT) – Many students will get a day off school as Mid-Michigan braces for frigid weather. Several school districts canceled classes on Tuesday, starting with the Thumb region, before subzero wind chills put the area in a deep freeze overnight.

Weather Conditions and Advisory

The Storm Alert Wx Team is forecasting dangerously cold wind chills that will reach -7 to -17 degrees around the region overnight. Actual air temperatures are expected to be in the single digits, but a stiff west wind will make it feel much colder. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for all of Mid-Michigan from Monday through 10 a.m. Tuesday for light snow accumulations, periodic blowing snow, and arctic wind chills.

Health Risks and Safety Measures

At such temperatures, frostbite can set in less than 30 minutes after skin becomes exposed to the elements. The Storm Alert Wx Team declared an Alert Day for Monday night through Tuesday morning due to the cold temperatures. Another Alert Day is on tap for Wednesday, when 2 to 3 inches of snow are forecast in the morning.

After the frigid start Tuesday morning, the high temperature later in the day is expected to be in the 10 to 15-degree range around Mid-Michigan.

Continued winds will drop wind chill readings through the day again. A slight warm-up is ahead for Wednesday with high temperatures in the upper 20s. Much colder air is anticipated on Friday and Saturday, with high temperatures in the single digits and overnight lows below zero.

The Storm Alert Wx Team is monitoring the potential for bitterly cold air on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Temperatures and wind chill readings could fall to -10 or colder on all three mornings. Saturday morning appears to be the coldest air of the season so far. Anyone who needs assistance finding a warm place to stay during the cold snap should call 211 for information about shelters and warming centers.
