Michael O’Neill: Turning ‘Annoying’ into a Compliment
Despite being labeled as “annoying” by Slovakia midfielder Stanislav Lobotka, Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neill is taking the criticism in stride. Speaking ahead of their crucial World Cup qualifier against Slovakia on Friday, 13 November 2025, O’Neill says he will embrace this label, viewing it as a compliment.
“My wife says I’m annoying all the time, so it’s not something that’s alien to me,” O’Neill said. “We take that as a compliment and it won’t upset us.”
Northern Ireland’s Style of Play
Lobotka echoed Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann’s earlier comments about Northern Ireland, stating that their style “isn’t particularly easy on the eyes” and “are not a team that wants to create anything extra.” This description reflects the tactic employed by O’Neill’s side, which focuses more on frustrating opponents rather than creating elaborate plays.
“We take that as a compliment and it won’t upset us.” Michael O’Neill expressed his stance on the criticism. “It’s not something we’re particularly bothered about.” O’Neill added, “As a six, in the position he plays, (Lobotka) is one of the best in Europe. We have to deal with that as a team, it’s not one individual player.”
Crucial Match Ahead
The match against Slovakia will determine Northern Ireland’s fate in Group A. A win or draw keeps them in the hunt for a top-two finish but defeat would end their hopes before Monday’s final fixture against Luxembourg. Results elsewhere on the night could secure Northern Ireland a play-off place via the Nations League, but O’Neill said he would pay no attention to that.
“We have to deal with that as a team,” O’Neill reiterated. “It’s not one individual player. We don’t envisage any dramatic change in their strategy or how they look to play tactically.”
Conor Bradley: Ready for the Challenge
Northern Ireland’s midfielder Conor Bradley, who had a tough week dealing with Vinicius Junior and Jeremy Doku of Manchester City, is prepared to face players of that calibre again. “It’s been a difficult week!” Bradley said. “Two completely different players. Vinicius was tough because of his speed and his skill. Doku was more speed and skill as well but also really strong.”
Bradley’s performance against Madrid led Teddy Sheringham to compare the 22-year-old to Steven Gerrard, which Bradley appreciated: “I’ll take that every day of the week!
Whenever you play for a club like Liverpool, there’s pressure and there’s eyes on you all the time. I’ve started to realise that over the last two years.”
Preparation and Strategy
O’Neill is focused on preparing his injury-hit squad to face Slovakia: “We have to deal with that as a team, it’s not one individual player.” He added humorously, “I wish he was Steven Gerrard to start with. That would help immensely in this game.”
The match between Northern Ireland and Slovakia is set for 13 November 2025, and the outcome will have significant implications for both teams’ chances of progressing to the World Cup.
