The Power of Family Support in College Football: Mark Fletcher Jr. and His Mother Linda
Mark Fletcher Jr., a star running back for the Miami Hurricanes, carries more than just a game plan onto the field. His mother, Linda Fletcher, has been his biggest supporter since he began playing college football. Ahead of the 2025 Fiesta Bowl, Fletcher shared during media availability that his mother was making her usual long drive from Fort Lauderdale to Arizona to support him.
Linda hates flying but loves driving to as many of her son’s games as possible. She made a 1,300-mile trip for their playoff matchup against Texas A&M just weeks before the Fiesta Bowl. “Once Linda Fletcher pulls out in her big RV,” she told ESPN, “that’s how you know we’ve made it.” Her presence is not limited to the game days; Linda also makes appearances on Mark’s social media accounts, always in support of him.

A Tragic Loss and a Resilient Spirit
In 2024, tragedy struck the Fletcher family. Just days before Miami’s game against Florida State on October 24th, Mark Fletcher Sr. passed away unexpectedly at the age of 53. Despite this loss, Mark Jr. chose to suit up and play, honoring his father’s wishes. He scored a touchdown that night, celebrating by pointing to the sky in honor of his father.
Reflecting on playing without his dad physically present, Fletcher said, “Just playing in one of the biggest games ever in my career, I’m always going to think about him and how excited he would be for me.” He added that his father’s influence is still felt. “He’ll just tell me to go out there and have fun, so that’s all I’m feeling on doing,” Fletcher said.
The Spirit of “Big Mark” Lingers
Linda Fletcher says her husband’s presence is still felt every game day. Though he can no longer attend in person, his influence remains a guiding force for the team and family. “Big Mark helped build my son up to what he is today,” Linda told ESPN. “It gets sad that he’s not here in the flesh to follow this dream with us, but in the spiritual realm, we say he’s here with us.” His spirit serves as both remembrance and motivation.
The Miami football team has adopted a mantra, “Long Live Big Mark,” which honors his legacy. This phrase is a reminder of the standard Big Mark lived by and the love he poured into the team. Before each game, Mark Fletcher Jr. used to text his father, continuing this tradition even after his passing.
The Whole Team Comes Together in Support
When it came time for Mark’s father’s funeral, the support was overwhelming. Five buses arrived at the funeral, with the entire Miami football team present to show their backing of the Fletcher family. “We couldn’t keep ourselves together,” Linda told ESPN. “Think about that. For us.
A little Black family from Fort Lauderdale. That was over the top.”
Mark Fletcher Jr.’s story is a testament to the power of family support in college football and the resilience shown by athletes in times of personal tragedy. As he prepares for the Fiesta Bowl, his mother will be with him every step of the way, both physically and spiritually.
