Margot Robbie Dazzles in Elizabeth Taylor’s Legacy

At the Los Angeles premiere of Wuthering Heights, Margot Robbie shone in a form-fitting Schiaparelli gown and the Cartier Taj Mahal diamond necklace, once owned by Elizabeth Taylor. This choice was intentional, as Robbie explained to reporters: “This necklace and the diamond itself has a pretty incredible history and feels like a very romantic history, so it felt appropriate to match with our Schiaparelli gown.”

The History of the Taj Mahal Necklace

The Cartier Taj Mahal necklace holds a storied past. Taylor’s husband, Richard Burton, gifted her this piece on her 40th birthday in 1972. The pendant bears an inscription in Persian that reads “Love is Everlasting,” along with the name of Nur Jahan, the first woman to receive the jewel as a gift from her husband, Mughal Emperor Shah Jahangir.

The diamond was then passed down to their son, Shah Jahan, who gifted it to his most adored wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Four years later, when she died, the emperor commissioned the iconic Taj Mahal mausoleum as a tribute to her.

Behind-the-Scenes Moments

In an interview with Vogue Australia, Robbie and Jacob Elordi shared some candid stories from their time on set. Robbie recalled a Valentine’s Day gesture by Elordi: “We were shooting on Valentine’s Day. You made my day and, as Heathcliff, filled my room with roses.” Elordi noted that he didn’t do anything special for her, but Robbie appreciated the thoughtfulness behind his actions: “You did a lot of very thoughtful things.”

Elordi also mentioned a symbolic gift given to Robbie during filming: “I felt like I beat you,” he said. “I gave her a note written from the perspective of my character and a ‘little tombstone thing,’ both symbolic of the film we were creating together.” Robbie responded, “It was so epic. Yours was so epic.”

Stylistic Choices

Robbie completed the look with custom 38-carat Lorraine Schwartz diamond earrings and a Fred Leighton ring. She has been intentional about her choices, stating that she and her stylist Andrew Mukamal try to be “intentional” with what they wear for red carpet events.

The film adaptation of Emily Brontë’s 1847 novel Wuthering Heights features Robbie as Catherine and Jacob Elordi as Heathcliff. Their performances aim to bring Gothic glamour and romance to life on screen, much like the timeless jewels they wore at the premiere.
