A High-Speed Chase Ends with Multiple Charges for Suspect

PINE BELT, Miss. (WDAM) – A tense high-speed chase that spanned three Pine Belt counties has concluded with the arrest of Adrian Speights, 41, a resident of Prentiss.

Initial Traffic Stop Leads to Fleeing Vehicle

A routine traffic stop at U.S. 11 south in Eastabuchie by Jones County Sheriff’s Department narcotics agents turned into an intense pursuit when the driver, Adrian Speights, refused to exit his pickup truck due to a strong odor of marijuana.

Agent Chase Smith attempted to assist in removing Speights from the vehicle but was dragged for 30-40 feet before he could be safely removed. This incident resulted in injuries to Agent Smith, who required medical treatment at South Central Regional Medical Center.

Prolonged and Dangerous Pursuit

The chase continued as Lt. Jake Driskell and Sgt. Joel Brogan pursued Speights down Warren Mott Parkway to Interstate 59 south.

The suspect veered onto Evelyn Gandy Parkway, then crossed the median on I-59 northbound before turning back towards Hattiesburg via U.S.49.

By the time the pursuit reached Collins, Mississippi Highway Patrol, Forrest County Sheriff’s Office, Covington County Sheriff’s Office, and Collins Police Department had joined in. Speights’ reckless behavior included jumping a median on U.S. 49, putting other drivers at significant risk of head-on collisions.

Ultimately, law enforcement used their own pickup truck to force Speights off the road and down an embankment, bringing the dangerous chase to an end.

Captured and Charged with Multiple Offenses

Speights was taken into custody by Jones County Sheriff’s Department and transported to the Jones County Adult Detention Facility. Both law enforcement officers involved sustained minor injuries but remained on duty.

During a search of Speights, authorities found a firearm, 46 grams of methamphetamine, 3.5 grams of crack cocaine, and 1.8 grams of powder cocaine. Additionally, Speights is a convicted felon who admitted to fleeing because he did not want to return to prison.

Speights faces charges including aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, felony fleeing, possession of a firearm by a felon, trafficking methamphetamine while in possession of a firearm, and possession of controlled substances while in possession of a firearm.

His first court appearance is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Friday at Jones County Justice Court.
