New York City Mayor-elect Faces Criticism for Puerto Rico Trip During Shutdown

NYC Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani has come under fire from a Republican congressman for attending a luxury conference in Puerto Rico, days after his victory in the mayoral election and during the longest government shutdown in U.S. history.

Rep. Lawler’s Criticism

Rep. Mike Lawler, R-N.Y., questioned Mamdani’s decision to travel to a “luxury resort” immediately following his win on November 4, 2025. He stated, “If Zohran Mamdani is truly serious about helping working families, he wouldn’t be jetting off to a luxury resort the moment he wins an election.”

Lawler further emphasized that other political figures, including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, were also expected to attend.

He asked, “If so, why? Who’s looking out for New Yorkers while they’re on the beach?”

The Conference Details

Mamdani is scheduled to travel to the 2025 SOMOS Conference in Puerto Rico, which begins on November 6, 2025. The conference acts as a policy summit for New York officials and others within the state’s political sphere. According to its schedule, Mamdani will attend a cocktail reception hosted by New York’s Democrat Attorney General Letitia James.

The event is set at the El Caribe Hilton in San Juan, described on the hotel’s website as an “iconic beachfront paradise” with various amenities including tropical landscaping, multiple restaurants, and an oceanfront pool complex. The conference includes panels such as “Celebrating Human Services Together” and “Workforce Development Through Rising Communities,” concluding with a “Toes in the Sand Beachfront Party” on Saturday.

Political Context

Zohran Mamdani defeated Republican Curtis Sliwa and former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo to become one of the youngest mayors in modern city history. Lawler’s criticism reflects broader concerns about political priorities and responsiveness among elected officials during times of economic hardship.

The government shutdown, which has been ongoing for weeks, adds a layer of urgency to these critiques. Lawler called on reporters covering SOMOS to demand answers from the Democrats attending, stating that “New Yorkers deserve to know where their priorities really lie.”
