Maine Senate Race Heats Up Amid Controversy Over Old Posts

Maine’s political landscape is heating up, with Democrat Graham Platner facing a unique challenge in his bid to unseat incumbent Republican Senator Susan Collins. The race has taken an unexpected turn due to the discovery of old Reddit postings that Platner had made between 2013 and 2021.

The posts, which were uncovered by CNN and followed by other media outlets, include endorsements of political violence, dismissals of rape in the military, criticisms of police officers, and derogatory remarks about rural America. These revelations have sparked a debate within the Democratic Party and raised questions about Platner’s fitness for office.

Platner’s Apology and Background

Graham Platner, an oyster farmer making his first attempt at public office, has apologized for the posts. In a video posted on social media, he acknowledged that the comments were made during a time when he was struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression following his service in the military.

“I’m sorry for this. Just know that it’s not reflective at all of who I am,” Platner said. “I don’t want you to judge me on the dumbest thing I ever wrote on the internet. I would prefer if people could judge me on the person I am today.”

Democratic Party’s Response

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chair, Ken Martin, stated that while the posts were not disqualifying from office, they were “not right” and “offensive.” He expressed relief that Platner had apologized for them.

“I don’t think they’re disqualifying, but certainly they’re not right,” said Martin during an appearance on CNN. “And I’m glad that he apologized for them. They’re indefensible, they’re hurtful, and they’re offensive.”

Despite the controversy, some Democratic leaders in Maine continue to support Platner. Karen Heck, former mayor of Waterville, expressed confidence in Platner’s authenticity.

Race for Senate Seat

In a crowded field for the Democratic nomination, Platner faces competition from Maine Governor Janet Mills and others. Mills has announced her candidacy as well, aiming to challenge Collins in 2026. Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders backs Platner, describing him as a stronger candidate than Mills.

The Collins campaign criticized the posts, stating that they “disparaged everyone from people living in rural areas, to the police” and highlighted rifts within the Democratic Party regarding candidate qualifications.

Political Director’s Resignation

In response to the news of old Reddit posts, Platner’s political director resigned. Genevieve L. McDonald wrote that she could not overlook the volume and nature of the past postings, many of which were made as an adult, not a young man.

“While I am empathetic to Graham’s experiences and respect his personal journey and growth, I cannot overlook the volume and nature of his past statements,” McDonald said in her resignation letter. “These statements were not known to me when I agreed to join the campaign, and they are not words or values I can stand behind in a candidate for the United States Senate.”

The incident underscores the ongoing scrutiny faced by candidates in today’s digital age and highlights the complexities of evaluating a candidate based on their past online presence.
