Nick Mangold, the celebrated center who wore number 74 for over a decade with the Jets, passed away from kidney disease complications at the age of 41. Mangold’s departure has left a significant void in both the team and the lives of those who knew him.
From Long Island to MetLife Stadium
Mangold began his journey with the Jets as the 29th selection of the first round of the 2006 draft out of Ohio State. He quickly became a cornerstone of the offensive line, leading the transformation of the team’s offensive front into a stable platform that contributed to three playoff teams and two AFC Championship Game units from 2006-10.
His first game in Green & White was on September 17, 2006, against the Miami Dolphins. He played through injuries, including a high ankle sprain early in his career that sidelined him for the first time as a pro but returned to start the next 59 games before missing another. Throughout his tenure, Mangold started 171 games for the Jets, including seven postseason contests.
Leadership and Humility
Nick Mangold’s leadership on the field was matched by his humility off it. In a letter to his “NY Jets community,” he shared that in 2006, he was diagnosed with a genetic defect leading to chronic kidney disease and had to undergo dialysis treatments after a rough summer. “I’m undergoing dialysis as we look for a kidney transplant. I always knew this day would come, but I thought I would have more time,” he wrote.
Mangold expressed his gratitude for his family, saying, “who have been my rock every step of the way.” His wit and warmth made him a cherished member of the Jets’ extended family.
Christopher Johnson, the Jets Vice Chairman, echoed these sentiments: “Nick was the embodiment of consistency, strength, and leadership. For over a decade, he anchored our offensive line with unmatched skill and determination, earning the respect of teammates, opponents, and fans alike.”
A Lasting Legacy
Mangold’s induction into the Jets’ Ring of Honor on June 2, 2022, alongside Darrelle Revis and D’Brickashaw Ferguson was a testament to his impact. His legacy extends beyond the field; he continued to support the team and its community even after retiring in 2016, making appearances at various fan events. “A big part of our lives were spent on that field,” said D’Brickashaw Ferguson, Mangold’s teammate for many years. “Then very early on I was at his wedding, there were so many times where we shared life together, family events.”
Woody Johnson, the Jets Chairman, paid tribute to Mangold: “Nick was more than a legendary center. He was the heartbeat of our offensive line for a decade and a beloved teammate whose leadership and toughness defined an era of Jets football.” The entire Jets organization, along with fans across the country, are mourning the loss of one of the best centers and players in franchise history.
