Jenna Ortega Makes History at Marrakech Film Festival

Amidst a lineup of seasoned filmmakers, 23-year-old actress Jenna Ortega stands out as the youngest jury member ever to participate in the prestigious 2025 Marrakech Film Festival. Joining an esteemed panel that includes Cannes Palme d’Or and Oscar-winning director Bong Joon Ho, Ortega is set to contribute her fresh perspective to film critique.

Embracing the Experience

In a recent interview, Ortega expressed her excitement without being intimidated by the presence of more experienced filmmakers. “I’m not intimated because I think I’m so overwhelmed with gratitude,” she said. “It would be a shame to come into this experience and be weighed down by some external pressure.”

Mixed Lineup of Jury Members

The jury panel also features other notable directors such as Julia Ducournau (Titane), Celine Song (Past Lives), Payman Maadi (A Separation), Anya Taylor-Joy, Karim Aïnouz, and Hakim Belabbes. Together, they will evaluate 14 first and second films including Akinola Davies Jr.’s drama My Father’s Shadow and Erige Sehiri’s Promised Sky.

Reflecting on AI’s Impact

During a discussion about the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) in cinema, Ortega shared her concerns. “We’ve opened up a Pandora’s Box,” she said, referring to the fear surrounding the rapid advancements in AI technology. Her recent role in Taika Waititi’s adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro’s Klara and the Sun had significantly shaped her views on the potential future ramifications of AI.

“It’s been a while since I shot the film,” Ortega noted, “but it’s entirely about that. And I remember some of the conversations we were even having was in relation to 2001, not comparing the movie specifically but that film is really interesting because almost the most humane character is the robot.”

“So, yeah, I think about it often, but I try not to let that influence or intimidate me in any way, shape or form, because the only way to come and deal with these hardships is to face them forward and not turn away,” she concluded.

Looking Forward

The Marrakech Film Festival continues its tradition of bringing together talented filmmakers from around the world. As Jenna Ortega steps into this unique role, her honesty and enthusiasm are sure to add value to the festival’s discussions on film-making and technology’s evolving landscape.
