The Rivalry for Rookie of the Year
Kon Knueppel and Cooper Flagg are duking it out for Rookie of the Year honors. The Charlotte Hornets’ Knueppel is making a strong push, with his coach Charles Lee declaring he’s “probably” in front.
Knueppel’s 44 percent shooting from beyond the arc has made him the most productive 3-point shooter among rookies and even tops the entire NBA. His 212 3-pointers are 15 more than the closest competitor, Tyrese Maxey.
A Mature Game
Knueppel’s journey to success was forged in pickup games with his father, Kon Knueppel Sr., who had him compete against grown men as a child. “Going to the men’s league with his dad and having to fit in on the court,” Lee said. This early exposure has shaped Knueppel into a mature player.
Fallowing’s Road Ahead
Flagg, meanwhile, is recovering from an injury that forced him out of play for several games. He had gone through a light workout before returning to the court and Mavericks coach Jason Kidd anticipates he may return in “a game or two” during their current road trip.
Fallowing’s absence has given Knueppel more opportunities, and his strong performance has put him in contention for the award. In the 49 games he’s played, Fallowing is averaging impressive numbers: 20.4 points, 6.6 rebounds, 4.1 assists, 1.2 steals, and 0.8 blocks.
The Last Quarter of the Regular Season
Kidd, who experienced a Rookie of the Year race himself over 30 years ago, believes Fallowing is “a special player.” However, the Mavericks’ reliance on Fallowing has been forced due to lack of ballhandling depth. “Obviously, when he gets back, he’s going to do the same thing,” Kidd said.
Despite the strong performance from both rookies, the last quarter of the regular season will be decisive for determining who takes home the Rookie of the Year trophy.
