The Rise of Indie Horror

Curry Barker, a 26-year-old YouTuber-turned-filmmaker, made his horror film “Obsession” in just 20 days for $750,000. Now, after its second weekend in theaters, the movie is set to earn over $79.7 million globally—more than 100 times its initial budget.

A Breathtaking Box Office Success

“Obsession,” distributed by Focus Features (a unit of NBC News’ parent corporation, Comcast), has been a surprise hit. In its second weekend, the film earned $22.4 million, up 30% from its opening weekend. This is a rare feat in the horror genre, according to Jason Blum, who executive produced the film.

Blum said: “Obsession is the ONLY wide-release horror film on record to grow in its second weekend at this scale—$22.4M, up 30% over opening.” This growth is unprecedented and has left industry experts speechless.

The Power of YouTube

Barker’s journey from a YouTuber to Hollywood success story is not an isolated incident. Other creators have also made waves in the entertainment world. Mark Fischbach, known as Markiplier, saw his indie horror film “Iron Lung” become a major box office success after its February release.

Kane Parsons, 20 years old and a YouTuber, directed “Backrooms,” which is set to open strongly.

Barker attributes this trend to the shift in how filmmakers are discovering content online: “We’re finally getting to the point where people are like, OK, fine, I’ll put my film on YouTube. Versus when I was in film school, that was kind of a last resort.” He adds, “People didn’t want to go the festival route; they wanted to do it in theaters.”

Industry Response and Future Prospects

“Obsession” premiered at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) before making its way into theaters. Its success has not gone unnoticed by Hollywood, which is now offering Barker more opportunities. He’s currently working on “Anything But Ghosts,” another film, and A24 recently tapped him to helm a reimagining of “The Texas Chain Saw Massacre.” For Barker, the future looks bright: “The opportunities that I have right now are pretty insane.

But I’m just trying to keep my head down and focus on what’s important to me.”

For now, it’s clear that the YouTube generation is bringing fresh talent and innovative ideas into the heart of Hollywood, disrupting traditional methods with their own unique vision.

“When we made ‘Obsession,’ we had no idea what was going to happen,” Barker said. “As the leader of the ship, I had to tell the people: ‘This is going to be huge. You guys have to give this a year, because it’s going to be something special.'” It’s that kind of faith in one’s own vision that has made Barker and his peers stand out.
