Radko Gudas: A Captain’s Absence

Radko Gudas, Anaheim’s captain and a key defenseman, is out for Game 4 of their playoff series against the Vegas Golden Knights. This marks his fourth consecutive absence from a game, making it clear that the stakes are high as the Ducks trail the best-of-7 series 2-1.

Coach Joel Quenneville gave no guarantees about Gudas’ return to the lineup, only saying, “We’ll see,” after the morning skate. Gudas himself is philosophical about his situation, calling it “one of the hardest experiences of my career.” However, he’s not alone; his teammates are supporting him as they battle for each other.

The Impact on the Ducks

Gudas’ absence has affected the team in multiple ways. One significant area is their power play, which has struggled so far this series. The Ducks have been 0-for-11 with a short-handed goal against through the first three games.

Mason McTavish, who was a healthy scratch for the past two games, could be a big boost to the team’s special teams efforts.

McTavish had six power-play goals and 11 power-play points in the regular season and has shown his value with two power-play assists in the playoffs. Coach Quenneville is now looking at ways to improve their power play, suggesting, “I think we have to look to shoot more (on the power play), especially maybe from the top to get some one-timers and better screens.”

The Long Road Back

Gudas has a history of returning after extended absences. He missed five games due to a suspension for kneeing during the regular season, played two more before missing five games again, and finally returned on April 12 against the Vancouver Canucks.

His return in the playoffs was brief, as he missed the final two games of the regular season before playing Game 1 of the first round. This time, his absence is longer than usual, having not played since Game 1 of the first round against the Edmonton Oilers on April 20.

His last game was March 12, when he was involved in a collision that led to his suspension.

Despite the challenges, Gudas remains optimistic about his role with the team. He said, “It’s fun to be around and making it this far. At the start of the year, I don’t think anyone would’ve guessed anything like that, even the start of the playoffs.

We’re getting better every day and enjoying each other’s company out there.”

You might think this is new, but Gudas’ situation is a reminder of how fragile these playoffs can be for players and teams alike. His return could be crucial to the Ducks’ chances in Game 5.
