Despite Georgia Tech’s unbeaten run since 1966, Haynes King remains grounded in his approach to football. “We know we haven’t really played a complete game yet,” he states. “But there’s an excitement, and we’re still out there trying to find ways to play a full four quarters.” This determination is a hallmark of the quarterback’s career, having overcome injuries, transfers, and constant reinvention.
The Journey from Texas to Tech
King’s path to success began in Longview, Texas, where he led his high school to a state championship. His journey through college football was less straightforward; after three seasons at Texas A&M, facing injuries and inconsistency, he entered the transfer portal. “Not a lot of Power Four teams wanted me,” King recalls. “But I believed in this staff—Coach Key, Coach Buster, and Coach Weinke—and this is where I wanted to be.” Under the guidance of Coach Weinke, who won the Heisman Trophy in 2000, King has evolved into one of the ACC’s most complete quarterbacks.

The transformation from an erratic passer to a leader with a keen understanding of the game is evident. “Coach Weinke has lessons for days,” King says. “The way he coaches is one of the main reasons my game has progressed like it has.” King attributes his improved performance, including significantly reduced turnovers and added dimensions to Tech’s offense with his legs, to Weinke’s clarity and attention to detail.

King’s journey extends beyond the field. Last year, he and his family worked with author Andy McLean to publish a children’s book titled “Haynes King: Hell of a Quarterback,” which encourages young readers to chase their dreams. “It was different, but a great way to give back and encourage kids to read,” says King.

King is focused on his current role as quarterback for Georgia Tech, but he has already looked ahead. “I’ve been around the game my whole life—my dad still coaches,” he jokes. “When the time comes, I’ll probably end up coaching too.” This forward-thinking mindset aligns with his commitment to football and education through programs like Georgia Tech’s Grad X.
