Doors of Indigo Mumbai-Kanpur Flight Jam for 32 Minutes Upon Landing

Key Highlights

  • An IndiGo flight from Mumbai to Kanpur experienced a 32-minute delay in opening its doors upon landing.
  • The problem was caused by a discharged battery, which was charged after the aircraft landed safely at Kanpur Airport.
  • No passengers were injured during the incident, but the delay caused panic among passengers due to initial flight delays and air traffic control issues.

Technical Glitch Causes Door Jam on IndiGo Flight

A technical glitch resulted in a 32-minute door jam for an IndiGo flight from Mumbai to Kanpur, causing panic among passengers. The incident occurred despite the aircraft landing safely and all passengers being evacuated without any injuries.

Initial Delays and Air Traffic Control Issues

The flight, designated as 6E 824, was initially delayed by 30 minutes from its departure point in Mumbai. After reaching Kanpur, it faced a further delay of 12 minutes due to issues with air traffic control (ATC) clearance. The aircraft finally landed at 3:58 pm, after which the passengers had to wait for over half an hour before the doors opened.

Passenger Accounts and Expert Perspectives

Hemant Pandey, a poet from Kanpur who was on board the flight, recounted his experience. “It was scheduled to land at Kanpur Airport at 3:20 pm, but arrived at 3:46 pm,” he said. “Unable to receive clearance from the ATC, it hovered in the air for about 12 minutes before landing at 3:58 pm.” Pandey added that when the plane finally landed, passengers became anxious as the doors did not open immediately.

According to IndiGo station manager Pankaj Pandey, the aircraft’s engine took time to cool down after landing. “The engine took time to cool down, and passengers were disembarked in about 20 minutes, not half an hour, as claimed,” he stated.

Technical Investigation and Resolution

An investigation into the incident revealed that the problem was caused by a discharged battery. The technical team at Kanpur Airport charged the battery after the aircraft landed safely. Following this resolution, the doors started functioning properly, allowing passengers to disembark without further delay.

Previous Similar Incidents and Industry Context

This incident is reminiscent of another recent event where an IndiGo flight from Kolkata to Srinagar faced a reported fuel leak and was diverted to Varanasi for an emergency landing. However, the pilot detected a malfunction in a sensor leading to a false alarm.

The incident highlights the critical importance of robust technical support systems and protocols in aviation safety. Experts emphasize that such glitches can be mitigated by regular maintenance checks and improved communication between aircraft operators and ATC.

IndiGo, India’s largest airline by market share, has faced several incidents involving technical issues in recent months, prompting the company to implement stricter maintenance procedures to ensure passenger safety and comfort during flights.
