FAU’s Student Union Expansion: A New Commuter Lounge

Florida Atlantic University (FAU) is taking steps to enhance student life and support commuter students by transforming an empty room in the Student Union into a new relaxation lounge. This project, part of a larger renovation effort, aims to provide a dedicated space for students to relax and recharge between classes.

The Diamond Palm Room: A Hub for Commuter Students

The lounge will be built within the Diamond Palm Room, which has been repurposed over time. Initially designed in 2024 as part of the Student Union expansion plans, the space was temporarily used for events while a permanent use plan was being evaluated. Now, it is set to undergo its final transformation into a much-needed relaxation area for students.

Broadening the Student Union

The project is not limited to just the lounge; FAU’s broader renovation plans include significant updates to the Student Union complex. These improvements will encompass a new one-story building for a multipurpose event center, an outdoor courtyard leading toward the library, and minor renovations to existing spaces on the first floor.

Student Union Director’s Vision

According to Chris Lynch, Director of the Student Union at FAU, the lounge will offer students a place to relax and recharge between classes. “This is part of our ongoing efforts to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for all students,” said Lynch.

The project is currently underway but no opening date has been announced yet. With construction already in progress, students can look forward to the addition of this much-needed amenity as part of FAU’s commitment to enhancing student life on its Boca Raton campus.
