Unfortunate Timing for Shopify’s Cyber Monday Outage

The e-commerce giant Shopify is currently facing a major technical issue that hit its platform during what should have been one of the busiest shopping days of the year. The outage, which began around 9:08 AM ET / 2:08 PM GMT on December 1, 2025, has disrupted log-ins for thousands of online stores, causing considerable frustration among small business owners who rely heavily on the platform to manage their sales.

According to Shopify’s status page and X account, the company is actively working to resolve the issue. However, the situation remains concerning as it affects critical backend operations such as API and mobile services, as well as Point of Sale (POS) systems. Despite these challenges, Shopify assured customers that their stores are still operational, allowing shoppers to make purchases without any hindrance.

Impact on Small Business Owners

“As a small business owner, this is so bad,” one frustrated store owner lamented on X. The sentiment echoed across the platform as numerous users shared their dissatisfaction with the situation. Owain Williams, Shopify’s lead for Website builder, provided some reassurance by noting that while shop owners cannot access their dashboards, shoppers are not impacted. This means that although small business owners face challenges in managing their operations, the customer experience remains seamless.

James Capell, a member of Shopify’s Web Hosting division, conducted a test purchase to demonstrate that the checkout and purchasing processes are still functioning. “I’ve also received confirmation that my order has been cancelled via email so; stores seem to be working, checkout, purchase, and cancellations are working (at least for the store I checked),” he reported.

Technical Troubleshooting Efforts

The exact cause of the issue is yet to be revealed by Shopify. However, their latest update on the status page indicated that they were investigating ongoing issues that caused error messages within administrators’ interfaces. The company advised users to remain logged in on any devices currently accessing the platform to avoid complications.

Despite these efforts, reports on Downdetector continued to climb, with over 3,700 complaints reported from US users alone by December 1, 2025 at 4:19 AM.

The issue also affected UK-based stores, though the number of reports stabilized around 1,300.

For small business owners navigating this Cyber Monday, the impact is significant as they struggle to manage their operations during a critical time for sales. While Shopify’s assurances provide some relief, the situation underscores the importance of robust technical support and contingency planning in today’s e-commerce landscape.

As of now, the outage remains a concern for both store owners and customers alike. With Cyber Monday serving as a crucial period for holiday shopping, the resolution of this issue is vital to ensure smooth operations for all parties involved.
