Emerging Greyhound Trainer Carlin Wendt Finds Success
Carlin Wendt, a 26-year-old emerging trainer in the greyhound racing industry, is experiencing his most successful month since February 2025. His journey into this competitive field began three years ago with the purchase of chaser Zipping Peewee.
Training and Success
In a recent interview, Wendt shared, “The purchase of Zipping Peewee really kicked off my involvement in greyhound racing. It has been a journey from there.” Currently, Wendt manages a kennel of 15 dogs, with aspirations to expand this number to 20. His first significant success came when his dogs Lucora, Chill Pill Jill, and Akela Long Shot all won races at The Queensland Greyhound Racing Club (The Q) in the space of 48 hours.
Wendt’s training methods have proven successful, with Lucora being his most prolific dog to date.
The black chaser has secured $16,455 in stakes this year, with six victories and four minor placings. Wendt noted that “Chill Pill Jill” and “Akela Long Shot” will be competing in upcoming races at The Q.
Industry Background and Mentorship
Wendt’s path to success has been influenced by his grandmother, Helen, who previously trained a kennel of dogs. He also credits trainer Ricky Hassall for imparting valuable knowledge about the greyhound racing industry. Wendt worked under Hassall before obtaining his own training ticket.
Wendt said, “Ricky trained many of the dogs I owned before he moved back to Bundaberg.
He told me that he didn’t have kennel space for my dogs so I decided to give it a spin myself. It has been good.” Wendt now works at Postmans Ridge greyhound facility alongside trainer John Jeffrey.
Upcoming Races and Future Goals
Wendt’s upcoming assignments include racing Chill Pill Jill on Sunday and Akela Long Shot on Monday, both at The Q. He noted that Chill Pill Jill is facing a tough race with dogs from trainers Travis Elson and Tom Tzouvelis. Wendt added, “If Chill Pill Jill comes out well from the red and finds the front, she will run well.” For Akela Long Shot, who is returning from an injury, Wendt said he hopes to get him some fitness back over the straight.
With a promising start to his training career, Wendt remains optimistic about the future. He stated, “I haven’t looked back since my first winner and I am eager to see if this momentum can continue.” As he looks ahead, Wendt is focused on maintaining his success while expanding his kennel size.
